excerpt

Prologue

There was a time when heaven was filled with peace and serenity. God, Jesus Christ, and all the Angels lived in harmony; no evil and no sin existed. Until one fateful day…

With all gathered to hear their Sire speak, God rose and addressed his Angels. Before all, he proclaimed His Son, Jesus Christ, was equal to Him. That Christ’s words should be obeyed as if they were His own. Christ would command the heavens, with the same authority as Him. All the Angels bowed down before Christ and accepted their Sire’s proclamation, all except for one…

An Archangel was furious with this proclamation. He was his Sire’s right hand, the deliverer of justice, the commander of many legions. He had served his Sire for centuries, and never failed him. It should be to him that God bestow power, not a Son whom had never even seen battle.

With his heart filled with hatred and jealousy, he gathered all the angels in secret. He told them that their days of sweet liberty were at an end. That God has now placed Christ as their ruler and that they should now obey his wishes. Many angels were angered at such a false statement, but many also agreed with the Archangel. He had led them for many years; why should they now question his leadership?

The faithful Angels fled to God and told Him what was happening, and together they prepared for war. With the sun rising on a new day, God and his Angels stood ready for battle against the Archangel and his followers. The battle only lasted a day, the Archangel and his followers defeated before the sun set for the night.

Seeing the angels on their knees before Him, He gave them one final chance… “Repent and declare your loyalty, and I will forgive you, my children.” He told his beautiful angels, tears falling with each word. This was His family. This was His love. How could they betray Him? Some of the Angels cried their penance, begging Him to forgive them for their deceit. They claimed that the Archangel deceived them, and they followed him into battle, as they have done for centuries.

God took pity on them, but still believed that their deceit must not go unpunished. He had spoken many times about the importance of punishment, that lessons learned must be earned… “I herewith grant you mercy, but as punishment you will be sentenced to an earthly realm. I will take your beauty as payment for my children lost today. In the place of your beauty, I will give you purpose. In mercy, and because I love you still, I give you life in this realm. Let this be known, that I was merciful this day,” God finished.

He placed them in an earthly realm, and called it Exsilium. In this realm they would carry their deceit, and earn their place with him. He took their beauty and replaced them with elements of his earth. Half would be of animal and element, and would resemble punishment. The other, in a humanoid form, and would resemble mercy. He called them his Fallen.

The Archangel, and those whom did not repent, were not that lucky. God looked into the eyes of His once faithful angels and only saw destruction, hatred, jealousy, and heartache. He knew that His beloved ones had died this day, and that others needed to be protected. But how could you destroy one you loved? He placed the Archangel, and his followers, in another earthly realm, but where Exsilium was above the earth, this one was in the center. With one wave of His hand, their beautiful forms were replaced with forms as ugly as their hatred and deceit. Using His word and blood, He sealed this realm from any other.

As He looked into the many eyes of hatred, He spoke his final word… “This realm will be called Hell, and you will be called demons. You, my once faithful Archangel, you will be called the Devil. Your angel name will be erased from the past, present, and future. You will be forgotten,” He proclaimed and left them to their demise.

Many years have passed since that day. God created mankind and cherished his new children. The male and female were his new hope; in them he would find peace again. But the Devil had grown strong through the years, and somehow managed to enter God’s garden. Here, he found the female God created, using her to strike back. He whispered words of deceit in her ears, and watched as God’s new children stepped into sin. With her first bite, a crack appeared in the seal around Hell, and demons escaped to earth.

From that day onward, the Devil and his demons created chaos amongst God’s new children, leading one after the other into sin. God looked upon this and decided to fight for his loved ones. He went to Exsilium and spoke to the Fallen… “You, my children, have proven your loyalty in the years that have passed, and so I came to offer you another chance at Heaven. If you slay the Devil and his demons to protect mankind, I will give you a place in my Heaven once again. With your last breath on this earth, you will join me and your brethren in Heaven,” He finished. The Fallen agreed and God gave them the power to move in and out of Exsilium to battle the demons. The war between Good and Evil began.

But as mankind spread over the earth, sin became their followers. And with each sin, the demons grew stronger and created more demons to torture mankind. The Fallen were now fighting against millions; they needed assistance to ensure victory. God had watched the battle from Heaven and saw that they were failing because of their numbers. He also saw that the demons grew stronger than the Fallen. He intervened and created a new creature. This creature would have features encompassing the best of both worlds. One half was as strong and loyal as the Fallen, while the other was as hard and enduring as a demon. This was His ultimate weapon. This would be His greatest creation. To ensure that these creatures could not be swayed, He placed Heaven’s soul into them. He called them His hellhounds.

The hellhounds delivered justice swiftly, as strong and just as the Fallen. Yet hard and durable like the demons, they conquered the earthly realm and the demons retreated. Not one hellhound could be swayed. All stayed true to their calling. God, knowing that the Devil and many more demons had retreated, gave His hellhounds life, and offered them a place among the Fallen.

Until this day they still watch over mankind, protecting them from evil. Will we be worth it?

excerpt

“Kasadya, don’t do this to me,” Chax spoke, using Corra.

I stopped completely and looked at him. Reaching for my necklace, I held it.

“I am so sorry, Chax. This is the only way; we can’t win any other way. I know; I have seen the end too many times,” I replied.

His face fell even more and he looked around, searching for a way out.

“I want to thank you… for being there for me. For searching for me when I went missing. For enduring all of my crap. I am sorry I messed up so many times. But not this time; this I promise. But most of all, thank you for loving me.” Even my mental voice broke down on the last part.

Chax started to scream and pound at the invisible wall, while others joined him. I looked at Nanini, shocked that she couldn’t get out.

“Take care of Max for me,” I sent to her.

Tears formed and ran down her cheeks, but she nodded.

“Kas, let us help you!” Lotan yelled. My friends, my family were still trying to save me. Tears ran down my own face now.

“I love all of you. Thank you for always being there for me.” Finally my mental voice began to a sob.

I turned away, afraid that the sight of them would stop me.

“Kasadya! Don’t do this to me. I beg you!” Chax yelled at me.

Demons were closing in around me, but my heart was so broken I just let the tears and heartache spill out of me.

“I am so sorry, Chax. Forgive me.” With that, I stormed forward.

I used my g-force punches to clear the masses out of my way. When that stopped working, I started shifting. Demons grabbed at me and some got in a slice or two. But I wasn’t stopping.

I saw Ballen trying to flee from me. He thought I was heading for him. Good. I needed him on the other side when I blew it up. Using my wings for momentum, I sent a massive g-force punch into the horde that remained between me and my target. They flew backwards, clearing the way for me to advance. I swiped at a few too close and took their heads. Blood sprayed all over me. Searching for the hole to make sure I was heading in the right direction, I saw the shoulders and arms of something freaking big, already beginning to breach.

I need to move faster!

I lifted up with my wings. They were tired, but I had no other option. Now I had the flying demons to contend with. We fought and sliced and I sent a few down to earth without a head. At last, I was advancing on the hole. Pain shot through my left wing and I tumbled to the ground, hitting hard. At the last moment I made sure that the front of my body hit the ground and not the back. Demons jumped me all at once. Ballen was yelling at them to stop me. I used everything I had left and flung out with my wings and arms. They went flying and just in front of me was the hole with the devil stuck in it. Ballen was standing at the entrance watching me, his face a mask of shock.

With a deep breath, I reached for the pouch and took hold of the balls. Now armed and ready, I just had a few feet to go. I stormed through the demons, not caring if they sliced me open. I wasn’t stopping for a fight anymore. I held the balls to my chest, sealing them from any other impact. Then, finally, I was at the entrance of the hole. With the last of my strength, I leaped into the air and went flying straight for it.

There were many things that go through your mind that moment before you die. I remembered my first step into Exsilium. Meeting Lada and Nanini. Meeting Chax and hating my first day. I remembered our fun at the beach, the Hellhouse and the grub spot. Seeing Lada and Lotan kissing for the first time. Meeting Max and Ryan, and then all of the rest. My heart no longer troubled by Kali or Seth or all the others who had betrayed me. I remembered finding Chax and the Fallen again. Seeing my parents again. So many memories bombarded me at that last moment. I remembered my day and night with Chax, and how it felt to be loved.

“I love you,” I sent a final message to him.

He was still screaming my name, begging for me to stop.

I remembered why I was doing this. For them I gave my heart, my life. Ballen’s shocked face was in front of me, right in my path. Just when I reached him, I dropped the balls and slammed into him.

excerpt

(Trey’s Point of View)

I hadn’t been on stage for all of five minutes when I felt the little buzz of power vibrating in the back of my skull. I was careful not to let it throw me off my game as I casually searched the crowd for the source. My first thought was that my vampire stalker was back, but she hadn’t generated a power buzz like this one. Aurora was backstage tonight – not like I’d mistake her power signature for anyone else’s – but it was clear that at least one vampire was standing in the crowd. When the song we were playing ended, I took my guitar off and walked back to the stand Chase and his drums were perched on. I grabbed a bottle of water and took a big drink, just to give myself some time to think. O’Shea started telling the crowd a story – leave it to him to fill in the silence – and I turned back around to scan for potential vamps again while he spoke. It took a moment, but I spotted him. He was sitting in the third row from the front, off to the left. He was even wearing a black suit, kind of like the ones the Emissary wear, but I couldn’t tell whether it had their emblem embroidered on the breast pocket or not. I met his gaze and held it, letting him know that I’d found him. He stared right at me in that way that vamps do when you just know they’re trying to read your soul, one wispy layer at a time.

He wasn’t just here for the show. That much was obvious. If he was Emissary, what on earth was he doing at a Catalyst concert? Certainly the Emissary had more important things to do than check up on Aurora and I, like tracking down Malena, for one. And if he wasn’t Emissary, well, that was even more confusing. I wished Aurora were sitting there in the front row. At least that way I would know she was trying to decipher the same questions I was. At least that way I would know she was safe. Instead, she was enjoying the show on a screen from the backstage lounge tonight, while simultaneously snapping pictures of several paintings to upload to her website so she could ship them back to The Waking Moon.

Then I realized there were two of them.

The second one was dressed like the first and was sitting in the lowest section off the floor to my left. He met my gaze as well, and I had to force myself to look away so the camera wouldn’t catch my stare-down on the big screens. O’Shea’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I heard him asking the crowd if it was okay if we slowed things down for a minute. The cheering that resulted was my cue to at least try and forget about the vamp in the crowd.

Like that was going to happen.

I set my water bottle down by my mic stand and leaned into the mic. “Let me see those cell phones in the air,” I said as the guys starting playing the intro to “Sweet Disguise.” I strapped my guitar back on and waved one hand back and forth to direct the crowd until the verse began. As I sang, I scanned the crowd again for the mystery vamps but they were both gone. I tried not to worry about it, not to wonder where they had gone and why they’d left in such a hurry, but it was easier said than done. I couldn’t for the life of me imagine why they were here. Even if I’d wanted to warn Aurora, I wasn’t capable of sifting through all the thought trails in the building to find hers. I’d tried on several occasions, but I could never quite manage to hone in on her specifically through all the energized, almost frantic thoughts, coming my way – more than half of which were about me.

The rest of the set seemed especially long after that, which made me feel like crap. The crowd was really into us, and I did my best not to be distracted. I’m even pretty sure it worked, but I was more than relieved when we finished the last song before the encore. I made my way to the dressing room at last. Aurora was sitting at her laptop, and jumped up when we all came into the room.

“I’m ready, I swear,” she said, hurrying over to the makeup chair as Chase plopped down in it for his zombie makeover.

I changed into my tattered suit, suddenly feeling more than a little ridiculous about the paranoia that had rattled my brain throughout the show.

Aurora was here. She was fine. In fact, everything seemed fine.

I started to wonder if I’d seen the vampires in the crowd at all. It didn’t make sense, anyway. Why would a vampire make an appearance in the crowd just to completely vanish moments later? Maybe I really had imagined the whole thing. Maybe I was in worse shape than I realized. I made a mental note to down some blood from the stash first thing after we finished here. I couldn’t help but scan the crowd again for the vamps when I took the stage as a zombie for the encore. No buzzing power, and no Emissary-looking mystery vamps. I was mostly relieved, and I focused on giving the fans the best zombie performance I knew how to give. Aurora was waiting for me in the lounge and we headed for the bus together. It wasn’t until we were about to climb the bus’s steps that we both felt it at the same time.

A power signature.

Aurora froze, her foot hovering just above the bottom step. She looked over her shoulder at me and said, “We have a visitor.”

Full name: Aurora Evins

Species: Vampire

Age: 23, but technically I haven’t aged since I became a vampire at 19.

Nationality: My father was Caucasian and my mother was Egyptian.

City or town of birth: Chicago, Illinois

Currently lives: Clearwater, Florida

Height: 5’8’

Weight: 115

Hair color: Black

Hairstyle: I wear it long and straight, or in big waves

Eye color: Green (Trey says they are the color of old-fashioned 7-Up Bottles.)

Personality: I’m a bit of a recluse. It just comes with the vampire territory. Maybe it’s partly because I’m an artist. I’m an observer. I’ve always been more into watching things unfold around me than jumping right into the middle of them. My OCD kicks in when I’m at work, whether it’s organizing my paints, mixing up a fresh batch of varnish, or arranging the way my work is displayed on the walls at my gallery. I don’t have a lot of friends, but being with Trey has taught me to open up a little. I’ve adopted the rest of the guys in the band as brothers They’re sort of stuck with me now whether they want me or not.

Likes: I love rain, which is convenient when you live in Florida. I also love Root beer (there’s just something nostalgic about it.) I love painting, and not just because my livelihood depends on it. Painting is therapeutic. I also apparently have a thing for guys who play guitar.

Dislikes: Alcohol. Not just because it tastes awful to my vampire taste buds, but because my parents and brother were killed by someone who was driving drunk.

Fears/phobias: I have a fear of death. I know most people probably do, but I think being immortal was the biggest thing that attracted me to being a vampire. There’s just something about the idea of not existing on this earth anymore that totally freaks me out.

Favorite color: Red.

Hobbies: Painting, hanging out at the local vampire hot spot called Club Sanguin, giving my best friend Mark a hard time, and more recently, sketching Trey while he works in the recording studio and beating all of the guys in the band at Guitar Hero.

Taste in music: Anything Trey sings. Lol. But seriously, I have eclectic tastes. I have a soft spot for pop rock and alternative music, though.

Talents/skills: Let’s talk vampire skills, since that’s more interesting. My moon-given talent is to be able to block my thoughts from the prying minds of other vampires. I’m able to ask for other abilities at each new full-moon cycle, but this is the one skill I have with me any time the moon is out. I’m also super fast, strong, and a bit on the sarcastic side.

Current job title and description: I’m the owner of an art studio/gallery called The Waking Moon. I named it after one of the names for the full moon in April because that’s the month I was made a vampire.

Tattoos: I have a tattoo of the band’s name and logo, Catalyst, on my chest on the right side.

Personality: I’m a hopeless romantic. I don’t fall easily, but when I have someone that I love, I want to spoil them and give them my heart completely. Living like that opens you up to getting hurt, but the rewards are worth the risk. I like to think I’m spontaneous. I’m pretty laid back and easy going, except for when it comes to my music and the band. I feel responsible for every note and every word I write in a song. I’m a bit of a control freak in that sense, so I like to be involved in the details in as much of the creative process as I can, from the moment we start writing new songs for a record, right down to designing the stage we use.

Likes: I like dogs. Cats make me sneeze. (Sorry cat lovers.) I like the ocean. I used to spend a lot of time surfing, but the band takes up most of my spare time these days. I like writing songs and being on stage. There’s just something about being able to tell a story with my guitar and my voice. I’m completely addicted to every aspect of my job. I’m the luckiest guy in the world that way. I love Legos. I’m like a 10-year-old. I even have a working guitar a fan made me out of Legos. It’s the coolest thing ever.

Dislikes: Fake people. Tabloids. Paparazzi that hide in my bushes in my front yard. (You know who you are.)

Fears/phobias: I used to worry that I was never going to find someone who could deal with my crazy life and my career choice. Aurora has changed all that for me…. Oh, Spiders! I don’t do spiders. They are pure evil.

Favorite color: Old-fashioned 7-Up bottle Green. 😉

Hobbies: Music, pretending that I know how to paint with Aurora, playing with my miniature pinscher Cowboy, hanging out with my bandmates.

Taste in music: I play rock, so I tend to listen to rock. I’m a big fan of Mayday Parade, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World, The All-American Rejects, and a bunch of other bands like that. I also love some of the classic bands like Kansas, The Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. My iPod has a weird combination of bands on it.

Favorite food(s): I love pizza and pasta. And Chinese takeout.

Disliked food: Sushi. I just don’t get it. I really don’t.

House/home: My house is huge. Too big, really. I went a little overboard when I was house shopping. Aurora calls it the mansion. I wish I could say that is an exaggeration. The pool is the best part, though. I did it all for the pool.

Current job title and description: Leader singer and rhythm guitarist in Catalyst.

about the author

imageI write fantasy for teens and adults. I’ve been creating stories for as long as I can remember. I’m also an avid reader, and I blame Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and her book “In The Forests Of The Night” for my vampire obsession. I absolutely love vampires and anything paranormal, but I enjoy fantasy of all kinds.

I’m addicted to Oreos and Raspberry Dr. Pepper from Swig. When I’m not writing I enjoy traveling, playing board and card games, killing zombies on the Xbox with my hubby, and spending time with friends and family.

Music has always been a passion of mine. I’ve been playing drums since I was 12. I also love playing guitar, singing, and going to concerts.

My favorite color is green, and the uglier the shade the better. I get bored of my hairstyle easily which has resulted in me having many looks in the last ten years.

I live in Southern Utah with my husband and son. I’m currently preparing for the release of the third installment in the Blood And Guitar series, Fangs And Fame, which will be out August 25, 2014.

Sometimes making the wrong move ends up being the right one.

For Elle Davis, love seems like something that happens to other women. So when her heart flutters upon meeting Trevor Cavanaugh, she is surprised by the momentary glimmer of hope she feels—and appalled moments later by her inexplicably rude response to him.

Before Elle, Trevor has never had trouble with women. But she is a mystery, and now he can’t stop thinking about her. He’s mostly convinced himself it’s just because he needs her expertise to find out who’s sabotaging his business, but there’s more to it than that…

Does love really conquer all in the end?

excerpt

Elle blushed and said, “Oh, I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention. Are you okay?”

Trevor looked down at her and said, “It’s okay and I’m fine. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” She looked at her arm and noticed his hand there keeping her upright. He noticed at the same moment.

He removed his hand from her arm and stuck it out and said, “I’m Trevor Cavanaugh by the way.”

“I’m Elle Davis, nice to meet you.” Elle said as she shook hands with him.

“Nice to meet you too.” He paused for a second as if he was thinking, “Do I know you from somewhere? You look familiar,” Trevor said looking like he was trying to remember how he knew her.

“I don’t think we’ve met before but you do look familiar to me too.” Elle said, racking her brain to figure out how she knew him, but knowing there was no way to forget

a man like Trevor Cavanaugh.

“What are you doing?” Trevor asked dumbfounded as he stared at a half-naked Elle standing before him.

“Surprising you, I thought you could use a break from all your hard work.”

Trevor closed the thick wooden slated blinds and rounded his desk. When he met Elle he wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her in close. He slammed his mouth down on hers; in a mating of desire and need. He wanted to do this slowly but Elle was leading the

kiss and taking it to the level of fast and furious. He loved this woman; she knew how to pull one hell of a surprise!

Elle pulled back from the kiss with heavy eyes and dilated pupils, “I think you’re wearing too many clothes.”

She unwrapped herself from his arms and went over to his desk and sat on the edge.

wonderland tales

the vanishing

A bad day spins out of control when Cadence finds herself in the middle of the Tulgy Wood with a grinning cat who can vanish at will and a renown Wonderland hero in need of a companion to the Red Queen’s court.

What happens when the hero who saved Wonderland from the destruction of the famed Jabberwock needs to find a worthy paramour before the Red Queen picks one for him? Devrel, the last of the Cheshire cats, has the perfect solution. He’ll just pluck one from the human world and gift her to him for his un-birthday.

Realizing her friends were playing a joke on her, Cadence is heading home when she sees the cat smiling at her. Next thing she knows, she’s in Wonderland and in the arms of a handsome man who thinks she’s slightly unhinged upon meeting her. Intrigued by Gareth, Cadence makes an offer to act as his companion in exchange for his protection as they journey from the Tulgy Wood to the Red Kingdom—a simple solution which endangers both of their hearts as the castle looms in the distance.

“Devrel,” the man called out. His forehead scrunched up, and she wondered what troubled such a handsome man so.

The grinning cat appeared on the man’s shoulder, towering over him as he leaned down and answered, actually answered, with, “She’s rather odd, isn’t she?”

At this, Cadence lost it. She laughed, only to be forced into a fit of hysterical giggles when both the man and the cat glanced at each other and back at her.

“Mayhap I broke her,” Devrel said, smile faltering ever so slightly as he reached down and swiped at the air in front of her face with huge paw.

The man sighed and shook his head. The hair falling over his forehead bounced with the movement. “Why did you bring her?”

“Bring whom?”

He pinned Devrel with a glare.

The cat snickered. “I jest. It’s what I do. As for the girl…” Devrel faced her again. “Let me fetch her some borogove feathers. We can mash them up to powder and have her drink them with tea. I believe she’s befuddled.”

blurb

When her father died, Lucy Mae Estmond inherited the family business. She has known all of her life that she would be in line to watch over the souls of the recently passed, keeping them safe from the Reapers.

The soul eating Reapers have been a plague upon the Earth, stealing souls and leaving the Keepers as the only thing that stands between Heaven and Hell. The factions despise each other and have warred for generations.

Then Lucy discovers an ancient legend predicting the arrival of the Chosen One, destined to bring forth an end to the Reapers. The surprises continue when she realizes she is that person. For Lucy, being the Chosen One doesn’t change much. Fighting Reapers is just another day in the life of a Keeper.

When she meets Jack Walker, they both realize they have an insane, mutual attraction. Too bad that he’s been sent to prevent the prophecy from coming true. His only mission: to kill the Chosen One.

SALEAD

excerpt

Inch by painstaking inch, the casket sank lower into the freshly churned earth.
The scent of lilacs floated on the breeze, along with the heavy stench of perfume and cologne, reminding Lucy of the fragrance aisle in a department store.
Lucy stood beside the grave, dressed in a modest royal blue sundress. She had chosen it specifically because her father always said the color looked the best against her hair, which was a mix of reddish brown that shone burgundy in the sunlight.
Tilting her head up, Lucy looked through the canopy of the aging oak trees that were scattered throughout the cemetery. The breeze shifted the branches, causing a few of the leaves to pull free and flutter off into the wind. There were almost no clouds in sky, allowing the sun to shine down over the funeral.
Her brothers and sisters surrounded the open grave opposite of her. All six of them also wore something fitting for a funeral, but nothing depressing enough to send their father into a rage in his afterlife.
Smiling, Lucy remembered the argument she and her father had during his last moments. “Lucy!” he had shouted at her. “Don’t you dare let them bury me in a suit. I am not going to spend eternity in a stuffy ass business suit. Make sure I’m wearing my khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt because I’m going on the vacation of a lifetime.”
That was toward the end, when the cancer was so bad that her dad spent most of his time in bed, moaning about how he should be up and about doing something. They both knew that the end was near, but Lucy had cried only in private. Her father wanted her to be happy he was moving on to the next life, but she couldn’t understand in what way, shape or form, his dying was a good thing.
So she shed her tears alone in her room until there were no more left to cry.
The fog of the memory lifted from Lucy’s mind and she looked across the grave at her brothers and sisters. The entire brood of Estmond siblings were born with the same color hair as Lucy had been blessed with. Each of them, as well as Lucy and Ethan, held a white rose in one hand. Later, before the grave was sealed, they would each take a turn throwing one down onto the casket, as a symbol of their wish for their father’s peaceful journey into the afterlife.
Just behind her brothers and sisters stood the mourners who came to pay their last respects. Most of them were town’s people whom they had grown up with, except for one group who stood close together, most of them around her father’s age. These were the Keepers whom her family had been closest to over the years. She could see Gloria and Edward White, the Keepers from one of the Napa Valley graveyards standing solemnly beside Ellen and Stanly Evans, who worked in the hospital in Santa Rosa. There were several other Keepers surrounding them who she recognized and made a note to speak to them later.
Beyond them, further out into the trees, the spirits began to show themselves. They appeared in the form of their human bodies, a bit transparent, but solid for the most part. It was harder to see in the daylight, but their misty blue auras swirled around them, helping form the solidity of their bodies.
The spirits were fascinated by funerals. When Lucy was little she used to think that they wanted to say goodbye to someone, but really it was because there wasn’t much else to do in a graveyard except talk to each other and attend burials.
Pastor Brown spoke solemnly, saying kind words and telling her father’s life story. Inwardly, Lucy cursed her father for choosing Pastor Brown, a man who had not known her father and she was sure didn’t give a flying fuck about him either. Her father hadn’t set foot in church since he was a child. Not because he didn’t believe in God, he just didn’t believe in organized religion.
Sensing her tension, Ethan squeezed her hand reassuringly. Turning to her left she looked up and met her best friend’s eyes through the tint of his sunglasses. Even through the dark lenses she could see the sorrow in his eyes. He had loved her father too, just as much as any one of the Estmond clan. In response, she squeezed his hand back and then turned back to stare at the grave again.
“And now, Lucy Mae, Gregory’s youngest child, will say a few words about her father.” The preacher cleared his throat, signaling to Lucy that it was time.
Lucy had no tears staining her face. She had cried all those tears long before the day of the funeral. Again, Ethan gave her hand a gentle squeeze and then released her so that she could reach down and withdraw the folded piece of yellow legal paper out of her miniscule handbag.
As Lucy unfolded the paper she felt like it was taking an eternity.
This day is never going to end.
Finally, the paper was open in front of her and she began.
“I know that this speech is going to sound like the speeches given for so many others who have passed on. But, when someone we love dies, we all feel pretty much the same way … so here it goes. My father, Gregory Estmond, was the best person I’ve ever known. Today, we stand here, not to mourn him, but to celebrate him. He didn’t want any one of us to be sad that he was gone. Because … he isn’t gone. He will always be with us. For those of us who spent each day with him, his teachings and his love will always be with us. He taught us love, he taught us respect, he taught us of our family heritage, and he taught us how to live.
“For those who are acquaintances of my father, you may have met him only once and you are here because he impacted you in some way.”
A few nods came from the crowd.
Lucy continued. “He had that effect on people because he had a genuine love and respect for human life. Which is not something all of us can say we have. He treated everyone the same, with kindness.
“Because my father had cancer, he knew that this day was coming and he had time to prepare for it. We had many discussions and the one thing he consistently told me was to embrace life. He didn’t say this because he was dying, it was his mantra. This man lived every day of his life like it may be his last. He didn’t wait until he was dying to find the beauty in this world or the people in it. He was always this way.
“Remember my father, not with sadness, but with the memories he left behind. Remember him with love, with laughter and knowing that he is exactly where he wants to be.”
Lucy stepped back, reaching out for Ethan to grasp her hand once again. She eyed her siblings, none of them were crying either. Daniel, the second oldest son, reached into his gray trench coat and pulled out a silver flask. Lucy sighed and watched as her brother didn’t even try to hide it and took a long pull of the whiskey she knew was inside.
Sadly, as inappropriate as her brother was being, she couldn’t help but wish she could take a giant swig off that flask too.
It’s almost over.
“Would anyone else like to say a few words?” Pastor Brown offered.
Sherriff Davis stepped forward, he had his Stetson clutched in one hand and hitched up his gun belt with the other. As always he was wearing his uniform. The Sheriff and her father had been pretty close … well, as close as a Keeper can get to someone without that someone thinking that they are out of their mind.
“I’d like to, if that’s all right.” The Sheriff looked down into the grave before his eyes swept across the crowd of mourners. Finally his eyes met Lucy’s and she flashed him a smile meant to encourage him to proceed.
“Greg was my friend … and an old grump like me doesn’t have many friends. Greg knew a lot of people in this town, but I feel damn sorry for anyone who lives here and never had the chance to meet him. No one, aside from my own wife, Darcy, could make me laugh like Greg could. He was loyal and respectful, even if he was a bull shitter. Good grief that man liked to tell stories. Also, any man who can raise a brood of children by himself and manage to keep them all out of jail is a good man in my book.”
Lucy could have sworn that she heard Principal Robertson blow air between his lips like he was blowing a raspberry. A few people looked his way and then back at Sheriff Davis.
“That is all I got.” Sheriff Davis stepped back into the crowd.
Evelynn Andrews, the librarian at the Summer Hollow library, raised her hand slightly. She was about seventy years old, but didn’t look a day over fifty five. Lucy hoped she would age that well as the years progressed.
Evelynn pushed her glasses up her nose and closed her eyes for a moment before she began to speak. “I don’t think I can say much more about how wonderful Gregory was, but I wanted to make sure to pay my respects by voicing them. I’ve known the Estmond family all the way back to when Kathleen was still alive, as far back as when she and Greg were high school sweethearts. No one, could have been a better father to these children. Sure, they have caused a fair amount of ruckus over the years, but he did it all on his own and they are educated, mostly well behaved.”
She paused to glance at Daniel who had decided that moment would be appropriate for another pull from his flask. “And above all, Greg gave these children a sense of loyalty. Anyone who knows these kids knows that if you mess with one, you get the whole bunch of them.”
A few people giggled, even Lucy, knowing how true that statement really was.
“This may not seem like a good thing in retrospect, but a family who stays together so closely is a rare thing these days. It is to be cherished. Greg gave them this sense of family and that is something to be proud of.” As she finished, she closed her eyes again looked Pastor Brown.
“Would anyone else like to speak?” Pastor Brown addressed the crowd of mourners.
Unexpectedly, Ethan released Lucy’s hand and raised it up a little bit. “I need to say something.”
Pastor Brown nodded and held his hand out beside him. Ethan moved over to the other side of Lucy beside the pastor. “There are very few people here who don’t know who I am.” Ethan began. “Gregory Estmond took me under his wing a long time ago, when Lucy and I were both very little. My parents, who have moved away now…”
He paused and took a breath, pondering if he should let out the deep dark family secrets. Well, secrets that the whole town knew anyway. That was how small towns worked.
“They were, drug addicts and alcoholics who barely took care of me. Greg came by the house one day to see my parents for some reason and what he found was a little boy locked in his room with no food or water and his parents passed out in their bedroom surrounded by drugs and trash. The story is a long one, a long sad story. But it ended with Greg and the rest of the Estmonds making sure I always had a place to go, that I always had food. Greg even went so far as to pay me for making good grades, just to give me incentive to do well in school.”
Lucy grimaced as he told the story, hating Ethan’s parents for what they did to him. Ethan had conveniently left out the part about how her father had beat the ever living snot out of Ethan’s dad that day he found him locked up in his room half starved. It was hard to believe Ethan’s parents came from a Keeper line, but sadly, not all Keepers were immune to addiction. Keepers were human, just like everyone else.
Ethan scanned the crowd through his glasses. “No one, except for maybe the Estmond kids, owes more, or loves that man, more than I do. He saved me and I will never forget that. I hope that none of you ever forget that either.”
Ethan lowered his head and hurried back to Lucy. She immediately took his hand again, knowing how hard it must have been for him to say all that in front of everyone. He never spoke about his parents. They moved away when he was fourteen and left him alone in the house. After that he came to live with the Estmonds for good. She and Ethan were friends long before the incident at Ethan’s house, but after he came to live with them, they were inseparable.
Pastor Brown closed up the ceremony with a prayer and then the bagpipes started on Amazing Grace. Lucy stepped forward with Ethan’s hand firmly in her grasp and looked down into the dark, deep hole where her father’s body would spend eternity. Luckily, she knew better than most that his soul would not remain in that body.
She held the white rose firmly over the grave. “I wish you peaceful passage.” She released the rose and it drifted down into the depths of the hole. “I love you, Daddy.”
Ethan mimicked her actions, familiar with the meaning of the ceremony from the many deaths of Keepers past. Her siblings had moved into a line directly behind her and Ethan, tossing their roses in as well.
The other mourners milled about, giving Lucy and the family some time before they headed over to her house for the wake. She caught sight of Gloria and Ellen chatting beside the giant wreath of flowers with her father’s picture inside. She wandered over to say hello. “Gloria, Ellen, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you.”
Gloria smiled, as did Ellen. “Yes dear,” Gloria greeted her. “It has been some time. I’m sorry we couldn’t make it sooner.”
“Or under better circumstances.” Ellen added.
Lucy nodded. “Well, I’m just glad that you could make it here now. I’m sure my father would be happy that you are here now.”
Gloria and Ellen nodded, they made a bit more small talk and then Ethan appeared beside her. “I think we had better get over to the house now.” He whispered just loudly enough for the older ladies to hear.
“Oh,” Lucy checked her watch deliberately. “You are absolutely right. I’m sorry ladies, I need to get some things ready over at the house.”
Gloria smiled again, a loving gentle smile of someone she had known her entire life. “You go on dear, we will see you over there.”
With a quick ‘see you later,’ Lucy backed away and then turned to join hands with Ethan again. “Thanks for saving me. I didn’t really want to talk to them, but I had to make sure to say hello to them.”
“You doing all right?” Ethan asked, rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
Lucy nodded. “I’m fine.” She turned her head to try and see his eyes through the dark tint of his glasses. “How bout you. Are you all right?”
He twisted his lip up a little and she knew he was giving slight eye roll. “I’ll survive. I just miss him and all this,” he gestured to the crowd, “actually makes it harder.”
She nodded again. “I know what you mean. I feel the same way.” Her gaze strayed from the grave and focused on her house. Their home sat on the edge of the cemetery, separated from the dead by a white picket fence and about thirty yards of grass. The yellow farmhouse had been in their family for several generations, and now it was hers, as was the family business.
“Let’s head over.”
She nodded. Of course they had to get to the house. But, it wouldn’t be for relaxing. There was food to get out and serve. People would come up to her and tell her how sorry they were for her loss, or how much her father meant to them, or some awesome memory they had of him. It was going to be a very long afternoon.
Almost over, she told herself again. Almost over.

Hey everyone!

Keeper vs. Reaper was a very music driven book to write. There were so many songs that helped bring this work to life. I actually have a playlist for it on my Spotify account, but I will list ten of my favorite songs here for you so that you can check them out too.

1. House on a Hill by The Pretty Reckless: This song was literally on repeat for so many scenes. I don’t know what it is about this song that just brought out the pain and love and personality of my characters.

2. Demons by Imagine Dragons: One of my two main characters, Jack, is a man who has many demons inside and this song was one of his.

3. Put the Gun Down by ZZ Ward: This song one of my favorite to use for stand off scenes.

4. Playing for Keeps by Elle King: Love this song. It talks about how the reaper is playing for keeps and I just found that inspirational.

5. What Ya Gonna Do by Hinder: Yet another song dedicated to Jack, who loves to drown himself in his own sorrows.

6. Let Her Go by Passenger: Normally not my style of music, however, this song was perfect for a scene in the book and I listened to it on repeat until the scene was complete. When you read the book you will know which one. J

7. Times are Hard by Redlight King: My daughter always tells me I listen to the most depressing music when I write, and I have to admit that I do. This is another melancholy, yet awesome song.

8. Your Winter by Sister Hazel: I know, I know, another soft and sad song! Sorry …

9. Freak Like Me by Halestorm: There, a not soft and sad song. I love Halestorm and this song was awesome for writing some of the more fun scenes in Keeper vs. Reaper.

10. Till the Casket Drops by ZZ Ward: Well, this one isn’t soft and sad, but it’s not exactly a perky song either. I used this for the funeral scene at the beginning of the book.

Okay, there you have ten of my favorite songs on my Keeper vs. Reaper playlist. You can also look me up on Spotify as Jennifer Malone Wright. Smile

She smiled and rearranged herself on the couch in an attempt to at least look more attractive. As alluring as one could possibly be while covered in coffee bean dust. But as she moved so did he. When her elbow hit the wall her funny bone pinged, and she dropped her cup of warm coffee right in his lap.

“Oh my God. I’m so sorry!” She jumped up to help him.

“It’s ok. It’s not hot, but I should probably dry these.”

“Here let me,” she said dropping to her knees in front of him. Before she could even think about the situation she had his belt open and then stood to help him out of his pants.

“This really is a full service place,” he said with a chuckle.

She jerked away from him as realization dawned.

“I’m such an idiot tonight,” Elsa said as she turned away so he wouldn’t see the tears pooling at the corners of her eyes.

She heard the rustle of cloth and turned back around to find him standing in a white T-shirt, black boxer briefs, and his socks. A naked pistol was clutched in his hand. He laid the gun on the coffee table. Elsa gathered his clothes and took them to the dryer in the other room. Luckily she had washed all the towels in the shop earlier, or he’d have been stuck in wet clothes all night.

When she came back into the room, she found him lounging just as he had been completely comfortable in his partial nudity.

It is the summer of 2012. The sky is blue, the ocean is crisp, and six young women are missing, including Madison Porter.

At the disappearance of her best friend, Amber Swanson falls into a spiral of destruction. She smokes, drinks and gets caught stealing. Her parents don’t know what to do with her, so she is sent to live with her half-sister, Rebecca, in Virginia.

Ethan Hunter lives by the saying ‘blood is thicker than water’; even when his mother up and left him. At sixteen, he’s torn between holding on to the only family he has left and forging his own path for the future. He secretly plans his escape from his small, southern town.

The two lives collide and, as Amber puts the pieces of her best friend’s disappearance together, she and Ethan are thrown into a whirlwind of secrets, deceit, and murder.

Excerpt

“Amber!” My eyes snapped open and I looked around wildly. Cold sweat beaded my forehead and my hands were shaking. My wooden leg wasn’t next to me but my sister and Jacob were. Jacob held crutches and handed them to me as our eyes met.

“Thanks,” I muttered, forgetting for a moment that I didn’t like him. “Why are you screaming at me?”

“Because you were screaming yourself,” Rebecca said. “You must have fallen asleep and you started crying out.” I sat up straighter. Not this again I thought. The doctor said the pills would take care of it.

“How bad?” I asked. “What did I say?”

“I couldn’t understand you,” Rebecca admitted. “But it sounded pretty bad. Is everything okay?”

“It’s fine,” I said sharply. There was no way that I was going to tell Rebecca about the dream. “I’m fine.”

“There’s no reason to be so angry Amber,” Jacob said. “Your sister is just trying to help.”

“I said I’m fine,” I snapped. “She’s not trying to help as much as trying to get on our father’s good side. She was always the goody two shoes…daddy’s little princess. If her perfect reputation wasn’t at stake, she wouldn’t give a damn about me.”

blurb

The Last King, Book I by A. Yamina Collins is an 11-part serial novel. A modern-day fantasy romance about a young woman innocently caught in a war between two age-old nemesis: God, and immortal beings whose ancestors ate from the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.

Twenty-eight year Emmy Hughes has never quite fit in—she’s six feet tall, dark-skinned, and daydreams of being Galadriel from Lord of the Rings. But when she is badly injured in a car accident that kills her mother, Emmy does not dream of fantastical worlds anymore—she just wants her shattered life to be normal again.

Unfortunately, normalcy is the last thing in store for her once she meets Lake George’s newest arrival, Dr. Gilead Knightly. Granted immortality from a line of people whose Great Ancestor marched into the Garden of Eden and ate from the Tree of Life, Gilead has been alive for centuries and has met everyone from Nubian kings to Napoleon.

But Gilead and his eccentric family are also hunted beings because God considers the Edenites’ possession of immortality to be theft. And for thousands of years He has dealt with their transgression by sending each of them a “Glitch” —an unsuspecting human meant to retrieve this stolen “property” of immortality and kill them off.

When Emmy discovers that she is Gilead’s Glitch, she is not only thrown into a world of immortals who eat bone marrow, panthers who read minds, and a family whose blood is made of pulsing gold, but she finds herself the target of Gilead’s vengeance: he must get rid of her before she gets rid of him.

Easier said than done. Because Glitches are not only an Edenite’s greatest threat—they’re also their greatest love.

Book Review from Black Pearls Magazine Online
The Last King by A.Yamina Collins, a Science Fiction Romance, is a marvelously layered story filled with drama, suspense and memorable characters. The author, a masterful storyteller, brings to life a story about a line of people who cannot die because their ancestors marched into the Garden of Eden and ate from the tree of life. God, however, considers this act, and the subsequent immortality that came with it, to be theft. God wants their immortality returned and he deals with their transgression by playing a cosmic sort of chess game with the Edenites!
The Last King is part fantasy, romance, religion and history. What an interesting mix for an 11 part series. This was my first time reading a serial novel and I have to say this one was excellent! I can’t wait to read the other chapters to this phenomenal storyline. I highly recommend this serial novel to the readers.

EXCERPT FROM THE LAST KING, EPISODE # 2
CHAPTER 8 – Her

Kill her, a voice in his head tells him.

Yes, of course, he responds. That’s what I have to do. And how should he do it? Should he follow her home when the lecture is over, come up behind her in her driveway, or wherever she lives, and snap her neck like a twig? Whatever he does, he needs to be cruel. He needs to teach her and the One who sent her a lesson. Yes, that’s it. He will do to her what his brother Micau did to his own Glitch: something so physically twisted that it would make the ears of any human who hears about it and finds her remains, shutter.

Slowly he starts to straighten up and just in time. The door to the auditorium swings open suddenly, and out it walks. He cannot make out her whole face because her hands are covering her mouth and nose, but he can see her big eyes, and the alarm in her face. Two other people are following it – following her, and making a commotion behind her.

“Hold your head back,” one of them is saying, trying to still the bleeding woman’s franticness.

But blood has already seeped onto her white dress, and Gilead can hear her saying, “Not again, not again,” as she rushes past him. Not again. So it’s happened before. Gilead thinks. Of course it has It happened the other day, while Gilead was standing outside the restaurant, didn’t it? She was somewhere around the vicinity that night, near the boardwalk, wasn’t she?

In a moment, the woman, looking a bit disoriented no, disappears into the bathroom and Gilead closes his eyes and bites his lower lip.

Now he knows why he missed the fine print on the flier, and why he had a desire to come to this lecture in the first place.

It’s Him.

Gilead curses under his breath; curses Him with everything he’s got.

Her? He thinks, in disgust. Against the greatness of me? That simple-looking thing?

It’s insulting.

Opening his eyes, he takes the opportunity to move toward the exit as a few more new comers enter the building. It’s all Gilead can do to appear as normal as possible—he stands up straight and forces himself not to clutch his stomach.

Outside, he takes in several quick breaths of air, and doubles over again.

Why should he fear her?

“I will break her,” he mutters to himself. “If I have to rip off her whole face, I will break her.”

Something about him saying this brings him a feeling of relief. He is clear-eyed and focused for a moment, even self-assured, for he knows that once he makes up his mind about reaching a goal, it’s as good as done.

He will kill her tonight, somehow.

But before he can contemplate how to execute his plans, he cups a hand over his mouth, rushes toward a nearby bush, and vomits onto the leaves and branches.

“Crazy sisters, best friends, a slimy ex, and a gorgeously sexy sweet man. Who wouldn’t want Another Shot at Love?” ~Stacy Nickelson, It Started With A Book Blog

excerpt

“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.

“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”

“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”

“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”

“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”

I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d already had enough.

But I have those cupcakes…

Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?

“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.

“Sorry,” he said.

“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”

“Me too,” he said.

I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.

Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

Once upon a time…

Bridal boutique owner, Alexis Gorecki, used to believe in happily-ever-afters—until prince charming turned into a toad.

Months after being blindsided by her own horrific wedding scandal, Lexie is desperately trying to keep her boutique afloat in the wake of all the bad publicity. Waging war against her evil almost-in-laws—the people who will stop at nothing to ruin her reputation—sounded much better in her head. Lexie’s strawberries and cream personality really isn’t cut out for taser guns and blackmail.

To complicate matters, Lexie’s first love is back in town with his sexy green eyes and out-of-control abs. He already broke her heart once before, the beast. Leo Moss has always been her weakness and he’s made it perfectly clear what he wants. Can he convince Lexie she’s not done with love just yet?

excerpt

“Damn it, Lex, you keep pushing me away and it’s pissing me off.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I’m not going to fight over you with some guy who’s already gone.”
“Me pushing you away has nothing to do with Jeremy,” I said and crossed my arms. What I didn’t say was that it had everything to do with Leo, with our past, with me not wanting to get my heart broken again. Why couldn’t he understand that? Why couldn’t he read my mind and know all the questions I had about why he’d broken up with me the way he had, and why he was suddenly here, again, in my life, torturing me with feelings I didn’t want to have. Feelings that scared the hell out of me?
His face lowered, and suddenly his lips were near my ear lobe. I sucked in a breath. “Did he make you feel like this?” he whispered, and then his lips pressed softly against the sensitive skin of my neck. “Or this?” His lips captured my earlobe, a flicker of wet heat, and then it was gone, replaced by a draft of cold air seeping through the crack under the door. “Or this.”
His lips captured mine and stars exploded behind my closed eyes. Everything was warm, my entire body weightless and fuzzy. The kiss was slow; the heat of it felt all the way down to my toes. His tongue slid against mine in a silken kiss of passion that erupted inside of me.

about the author

clip_image037
Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.
Most days she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.
Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new romantic comedy series, What’s Love??? includes Another Shot At Love, and Done With Love releasing April 2014.

Summer at Paradise Ranch

From R. Barri Flowers, author of the bestselling teen novels, COUNT DRACULA’S TEENAGE DAUGHTER, TEEN GHOST AT DEAD LAKE, and OUT FOR BLOOD, come the start of an exciting new young adult adventure series, SUMMER AT PARADISE RANCH.

Four months shy of turning sixteen, Lexi Montoya was still trying to come to terms with her parents’ divorce and her mom’s remarriage to a man she met online, relocating to Maui, Hawaii.

Choosing to remain with her dad in Seattle, Lexi had planned to spend her first summer since the divorce hanging out with her boyfriend, Matt, and best friend, Robin. But her dad had other plans, insisting she spend the summer visiting her mom and stepdad at his ranch called Paradise Ranch in Wailuku, in west Maui.

Lexi went there with an attitude. Then she meets a cute Hawaiian guy named Mitsuo, is thrown into a love triangle, become friends with a teen girl living on a ranch next door, April; rides her first horse– an Arabian mare named Poppy– learns to hula dance and surf, and finds herself embroiled in a dangerous rescue mission when Poppy and another horse named Casper go missing from her stepfather’s ranch.

By the time her tropical summer adventure comes to an end, Lexi hates to leave Maui and say goodbye to Mitsuo. But can she stay when Matt is waiting for her back at home to pick up where they left off? Or will he lose her to a summer romance?

SUMMER AT PARADISE RANCH is a great coming of age adventure with young romance and mystery in paradise. Now in eBook, print, and audio.

INTERVIEW

1.) What was the best thing about writing this book?

The best thing about writing SUMMER AT PARADISE RANCH was doing a story that takes place primarily in Maui, Hawaii, and getting to include many of the fun things about living in Maui, including horseback riding, swimming, surfing, eating, and hula dancing.

I believe that Hawaii is the best place to visit and even better place to live! Readers will love the setting and the characters, especially the protagonist, Lexi Montoya, who comes to the island unhappily to spend summer with her mother and gets far more than she bargained for in more ways than one.

2.) Where did you get your idea for this story?

The idea to write SUMMER AT PARADISE RANCH came into my mind as a result of my deep love for Maui, Hawaii, and sense of adventure. As a part time resident of the magnificent and charming island, with its diversity, including working horse and cattle ranches, luxury and not so luxurious homes, sandy white beaches, the vast beauty of the ocean, the merging of different races, ethnicities, and cultures in a friendly, laid back environment, and of course, hula dancing–all made for the perfect setting for this young adult romance and adventure novel with a bit of mystery and suspense to spice things up that much more.

Also, similar to my protagonist, Lexi Montoya, I have lived in the Pacific Northwest, which has its own claim to beauty and charm–making for a great place for Lexi to live (Seattle), before being forced to spend the summer in Maui with her mother, who divorced her dad and remarried a Hawaiian rancher she met over the Internet.

Having Lexi resistant to going to Maui was as much about her love for Seattle and her boyfriend, Matt, as the beef she has against her mom for essentially abandoning. The irony here is that most people would jump at the chance to spend the summer in Hawaii, but Lexi’s feelings in this regard went against the grain initially–till she arrives in paradise and begins to warm up to the idea of the forced vacation.

One of the best things about Hawaii is that it offers so many activities, such as riding horses, surfing, swimming, hanging out on beach, shopping, eating, and hula dancing. I utilized all of these things in the storyline for Lexi as she gets in touch with the culture and her surroundings — learning to ride a horse, surf, and hula dance, while also falling for a cute Hawaiian teen named Mitsuo.

As for the broken home Lexi comes from, knowing that this is all too common in America, I wanted to make her life something that many teens face today with all the angst that comes from it and dealing with.

Finally, no YA novel would be complete without the protagonist facing a bit of danger. In this case, Lexi and Mitsuo go after some stolen horses, that becomes more than either bargained for.

This was a great novel to write and I am certain that readers will love it, as I take full advantage of the Maui setting in creating a realistic and fun teen adventure.

3.) What would you tell aspiring writers out there?

I would tell aspiring authors to follow your dreams to fruition, read as many bestselling books as you can in the genre you would like to write in, to give you some perspective on what works; take criticism constructively, write with passion and determination, and lastly, don’t put off til tomorrow what you can do today–then do it!

4.) What is your favorite book?

84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, with a close second being The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

5.) Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

Definitely green tea, which I love and is good for me too!

EXCERPT

CHAPTER ONE

It was the last day of school before summer break and Lexi Montoya was leaning against her locker facing her boyfriend, Matt Holloway. Next to Lexi was her best friend, Robin Forrester, who was facing her boyfriend, Dirk Watson. Just four months shy of her sixteenth birthday, Lexi hated the thought that instead of spending summer vacation in Seattle, where she lived and had her friends to hang out with, she was being forced by her dad to go visit her mother in Hawaii.

The same mother who had abandoned her nearly a year ago, divorced her dad, and married a man she’d met on the Internet. In Lexi’s way of thinking, she was in no hurry to see her mother again—certainly not anytime soon. But her father had other ideas, believing it would be good for her to try to repair the relationship with her mother. Lexi suspected that he had an ulterior motive for sending her packing to Maui. Her dad had a new girlfriend, whom she believed he wanted to spend more time with—minus the presence of a teenage daughter to mess things up.

The notion of being an ocean way from Matt for an entire summer annoyed Lexi. But she had no choice in the matter.

It didn’t set well with Matt either. “That sucks!” he complained as she broke the news to him, gazing down at her with deep blue eyes.

“I know, right,” Lexi told him, flipping her long brown hair over her shoulder.

“What am I going to do without my best friend?” Robin complained, her forehead creasing above thin brows.

Dirk rolled his eyes. “Are you kidding me? Who wouldn’t want to go to Hawaii for an all-expense paid trip to paradise?”

“Uh me,” Lexi said. “Especially when my life is right here.”

“And it’ll be here when you get back,” he said. “But going to Maui…wow. Maybe my mom should try to hook up with someone there. My dad probably wouldn’t care too much, since she’s always complaining that he never pays attention to her anyway.”

Robin frowned. “That’s not very nice.”

Dirk shrugged. “Hey, I’m just saying.”

“Maybe I should give you the ticket then,” Lexi suggested. “You can go in my place and I’ll stay at your house, with my dad totally clueless.”

Dirk laughed. “I think Matt would probably have a problem with that.”

Matt ran a hand through his thick brown hair. “I’d have more of a problem if she met some surfer dude in Hawaii and decided to kick me to the curb and never come back.”

Lexi met his eyes in earnest. “That’s not going to happen,” she promised. “No surfer dude could ever take your place with me.”

“You sure about that?”

“Positive. I’ll just be going through the motions and putting up with my mom until the summer ends and then I’m back here where I belong.”

That seemed to pacify him. “Cool,” he said, grinning, before giving her a kiss.

Lexi was only too happy to kiss him back, loving the feel of his lips on hers. Besides, she wanted the kiss to be enough for both of them to last through the entire summer.

“Get a room,” Robin joked.

Blushing, Lexi broke the lip lock. “We’ll pick it up later,” she promised Matt.

“Sounds good to me,” he said.

“I just hope that in between all that fun in the sun you find the time to text your best friend and boyfriend—like every day!” Robin said.

“Definitely,” Lexi promised, even though the last thing she expected was much fun while on the island, where she was headed against her wishes.

* * *

That evening, Lexi was packing and wishing she didn’t have to, when her father came into her room.

“Can I help with anything?” he asked.

She faced him and frowned. “Yes, you can tell me I can stay home for the summer.”

“We’ve already been through this, Lexi,” he said. “You need to spend some time with your mother.”

“Why should I?” she challenged him. “She walked out on us.”

“I know and I’m not excusing that. But she’s still your mother.”

“I wish she wasn’t!”

Lowell Montoya stepped closer to his daughter, his brow furrowed. “You don’t mean that.”

“Yes, I do,” Lexi insisted, or at least she did on some level. “How can you just pretend what she did to you when she ran off to be with another man is okay?”

“It’s not okay,” he said. “What she did was unforgivable. Except, at some point, you have to forgive, if not forget, and move on.”

“You mean move on to Rebecca?” Lexi shot him a cold stare. “Isn’t that really what this is about—shoving me aside so you can pretend I don’t exist, just like mom did?”

“No, honey, that’s not what this is about. I would never shove you aside for anyone, and I don’t think that’s what your mother was doing—not intentionally anyway.” He paused. “This will always be your home. My relationship with Rebecca has nothing to do with how I feel about you as my only child and someone I love dearly. You’ve always told me I need to get a life. So now I’m trying to take you up on that and see where it goes.”

“Yeah, well I’d like to do the same thing with my relationship with Matt,” she said.

“And you will have plenty of time for that,” he assured her. “Your mother’s not perfect and neither am I. She’s reached out to you. Just give her a chance.”

Lexi fixed him with teary eyes. “And what if I hate it there?”

“Then you can come home. But I’m pretty sure that, in spite of your beef with your mother and desire to stay in Seattle, there will be plenty of things in Maui to keep you occupied.”

“I hope so,” Lexi muttered, though all she could really think about at the moment was being forced to face the mother who had turned her back on her.

He wrapped his arms around her and Lexi rested her head against his chest. I know I have to do this, she told herself reluctantly. Otherwise, she might never find out why her parents’ marriage failed when she hadn’t seen it coming. Or would her mother not even bother to tell her side of the story?

CHAPTER TWO

The following morning, Lexi was on the long flight to Maui reading a novel. Or at least she was trying to. She had trouble concentrating, as she found herself thinking about Matt, whom she was already starting to miss. Also weighing on her mind was what to say to her mother. Very little had been said when she just up and left for Hawaii to start a new life, minus her husband and daughter. Lexi wondered how she could get past that now that her mom was hoping to reconnect with this visit.

I can never forgive her for what she did, Lexi thought, even if her dad seemed to have done just that now that someone else had come into his life. But if she was going to get through this summer, she just needed to keep her cool somehow and deal with it until it was time to go back home.

The plane touched down at Kahului Airport right on time. After grabbing her bag, Lexi made her way into the terminal, before spotting the familiar face.

Lexi was approached by her mother, who looked like her, with long brown hair and blue eyes, but was a little taller and a lot tanner. Standing beside her was a tall Hawaiian man in his late thirties with black hair in a short ponytail and a mustache.

“Hello, Lexi,” her mother said.

She did not respond while her mom gave her a brief hug.

“This is my husband, Ernesto Estrella.”

Lexi gazed up at him as he said, “Aloha, Lexi.”

“Hi,” she said tonelessly.

“How was your flight?” he asked.

“It was okay.”

Joyce Estrella smiled weakly at her daughter. “I’m sure you must be tired and hungry.”

“Kind of,” she admitted.

“Well, we’ll take care of that,” her mother said. “Let’s go get the rest of your bags and get out of here.”

Lexi, still in no mood to be too hospitable, rolled her eyes and said, “Whatever.”

When she stepped outside, the warm, muggy air hit her face and Lexi took a moment to survey the surroundings. She saw some palm trees and other Hawaiian scenery. She couldn’t believe she was in Hawaii on the island of Maui, which made her the envy of many of her friends. Then she came back down to earth when she remembered she was there under protest.

The drive in Ernesto’s Ford Bronco was mostly silent other than a few words by Ernesto, seemingly for effect. That was fine with her. Since she really didn’t have anything nice to say, she figured it was best not to say anything.

Soon she saw them pass by the sign to Wailuku, the place in west Maui, located in Maui County, where her mother and Ernesto lived. It was there that Ernesto operated a working ranch. Lexi had seen livestock at the State Fair and zoo, but never on an actual ranch. But she was more interested in going to the beach and swimming while in Hawaii.

They passed by a red-haired girl around Lexi’s age, who was riding a horse in a meadow. Lexi felt a little envious, since she had never been on a horse before. Maybe she would get the chance during this trip.

“Welcome to Paradise Ranch,” Ernesto announced, as they drove up a winding road and through some gates onto the property.

Once out of the car, Lexi took in the ranch with its rolling hills, grazing horses, goats, ducks, chickens, and more.

Ernesto chuckled. “It’s probably not what you’re used to back in Seattle.”

“No, not quite,” she admitted, carrying one of her bags.

“Don’t worry,” he said, holding her other bags. “You’ll feel at home in no time at all.”

Lexi wasn’t so sure about that, but gave him a tiny smile anyway. It left her when she looked at her mother.

A couple of men walked up to them in full cowboy attire.

“Well, who do have we here?” said the darker skinned lanky one with black hair.

“This is Lexi,” Ernesto said, “Joyce’s daughter. Yoshito is one of our ranch hands.”

“Aloha,” he said, tipping his hat.

“And that’s Doug, our ranch foreman.”

“Howdy,” he said with a nod.

“Hi,” Lexi told them, noting that the ranch foreman was shorter and older than the other one and had gray hair.

“Why don’t we go inside and show you around,” Ernesto said.

She nodded at the man who was now her stepfather, something that would take a lot of getting used to.

They headed for the main house, which was surrounded by swaying palm trees. It was huge with lots of windows and a wraparound lanai. Inside, it looked just as spectacular with high ceilings, hardwood floors, and nice furnishings. Lexi noted that the windows in the Great Room had amazing ocean views.

“This is your room,” Ernesto said on the second floor, as she followed him and her mother into it.

It was spacious, bright, and had a ceiling fan in motion.

Ernesto put her bags down. “I’ll leave you two alone and whip up something to eat,” he said, and gave Lexi’s mom a kiss on the mouth.

“We’ll be down soon,” she told him. When they were by themselves, her mother said, “I’m glad you came.”

Lexi curled her lip at the corner. “As if I had a choice.”

Joyce frowned. “Look, I know you’re angry, but I want to try to make it up to you, if you’ll let me.”

“I don’t see how you can,” Lexi told her honestly. “You left dad and you left me so you could hook up with a man you met on the Internet.”

“It wasn’t like that,” she said.

“So what was it like, Mom?” Lexi demanded. “What was so wrong with the life you had that you gave it all up for this?”

Joyce sucked in a deep breath. “It’s a long story.”

Lexi pursed her lips. “Yeah, right. You can’t possibly justify what you did. And forcing me to come here won’t make up for it.”

“Look, whether you like it or not, I’m still your mother.”

“No—you stopped being my mother the moment you abandoned me,” Lexi retorted.

Joyce sighed. “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

“Just leave me alone.”

She glared at her mother and watched as she left the room.

Lexi took a moment to calm down, while wondering if she had reacted too strongly without really giving her mother a chance to explain.

How did she expect me to act? Lexi asked herself, having had months for her feelings to fester.

She took out her cell phone and texted her dad, Matt, and Robin to let them know she had arrived safe and sound.

* * *

Lexi sat at a long dining room table eating Hawaiian barbecued chicken, corn on the cob, and pineapple coleslaw. She admitted to herself that it was good, while remaining silent as her mother and Ernesto chatted as if they were one big, happy family.

“So I’m sure you don’t know too much about me,” her stepfather said.

“Not really,” Lexi said, trying to remember the few things her mother had offered to share about the man she had married.

“Well, maybe I can fill in the blanks,” he said. “I lost my first wife nine years ago in a tragic accident. Back then, we had both hoped to run this ranch and have a family. Once Gloria was gone, I thought I’d never meet anyone to share my life with again. Then your mother stepped into it and, what do you know, we turned out to be a perfect fit. I couldn’t be happier, especially now that I’ve been given the opportunity to meet her beautiful daughter.”

“We’re not a family,” Lexi blurted out, even if she appreciated the compliment. “You’re not my father and she’s barely my mother.” She shot her mom a cold stare and stood up from the table.

“Sit back down right now, young lady!” Joyce ordered her.

“I need to get some air,” Lexi snapped back, and stormed off. She heard her mother say, “I’ll talk to her.”

Ernesto responded, “Let her go. Give her some time to cool off and adjust.”

Lexi didn’t know if either was possible. Why had her father made her come here anyway? Did he seriously believe that seeing her mother and another man play house and pretend everything was all right would make it so?

She went outside and saw the red-haired girl she noticed riding earlier approaching the house.

“You must be Lexi,” she said. “I’m April Ashbrook. I live next door, even though the houses around here are pretty spread out.”

Lexi walked up to her. They were about the same height and slender build. April’s hair was long, with bangs and was pulled back into a ponytail. She had aquamarine eyes.

“Hi,” Lexi said. “How did you know?”

“Your mom has practically been singing about her daughter coming to spend the summer,” April said.

Lexi cocked a brow. “Seriously?”

April smiled. “She and my mom have become good friends since your mother moved in with Ernesto. Joyce talks about you all the time, and how much she misses you. Does that surprise you?”

“Uh, yeah,” admitted Lexi. “My mom and I aren’t exactly on the best of terms right now.”

“Oh.” April eyed her. “Want to take a walk with me?”

Since Lexi wasn’t eager to go back into the house yet, this was a no brainer. “Okay.”

“So you’re from Seattle?”

“Yep.”

“Cool. I was there once a long time ago, but I can’t remember much about it.”

“It’s a nice place to live,” Lexi said, proud to be from the Pacific Northwest.

“That’s great,” April told her. “Hawaii is pretty nice to call home, too.”

Lexi smiled as she thought about all the things Hawaii had to offer. “So how long have you lived in Maui?”

April grinned. “Pretty much my entire life. My dad is a retired member of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was stationed in Maui at Maalaea Harbor just a year after I was born and remained with the Coast Guard until five years ago.”

“So he’s now a farmer?”

April chuckled. “Actually, he’s a rancher, like Ernesto.”

“Is there really a difference?” Lexi asked.

“Not always. Farmers mostly cultivate land to produce food. Ranchers raise livestock, like cattle and horses. Some people are ranchers and farmers.”

Lexi blushed. “Thanks for the lesson for a city girl.”

April smiled. “Anytime.” She paused. “So what’s with you and your mom, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Actually, she did mind, since she barely even knew her. But she also felt comfortable around April, as though they were longtime friends.

“My mom met Ernesto online while she was still married to my dad.”

“Ouch!” April made a face. “I can see how that might piss you off.”

“Exactly.”

“Still, there are usually two sides to every story,” April said.

“Meaning…?”

“Meaning that maybe she had a good reason for doing what she did.”

Lexi frowned. “Hey, my dad never cheated on my mom and he wasn’t abusive or like a mass murderer or anything.”

April chuckled. “That’s good to know—especially on those last two points. Neither was mine. But that didn’t stop my parents from separating for a while, before deciding to get back together. It’s been cool since then, but it doesn’t always work out that way for every married couple.”

“Yeah, I suppose you’re right,” Lexi conceded, and thought about Matt’s parents getting a divorce. It had taken him time to accept it, but it seemed like he had. Maybe she should too, since it was pretty obvious her parents weren’t ever getting back together. “It still hurts, though,” she told April.

“I know,” she said. “Maybe now that you’ll be spending the summer with your mom, you can get past that.”

Lexi nodded thoughtfully, while keeping her options open. “I saw you riding a horse when we drove in.”

“Yeah, I love riding horses,” April said. “I’ve been riding since I was nine. Do you ride?”

“Not yet,” Lexi admitted. “But I plan to learn.”

“It’s easy as pie. We should go riding together sometime.”

“Cool,” Lexi said, though preferring she had a little practice first, so she could keep up without falling on her butt.

“Well, I better get back home,” April said. “I have to feed the chickens.”

“Wow,” Lexi said. “Sounds like fun.”

April laughed. “Not really, but I like helping out around the ranch, especially during summer break. You’re welcome to join me anytime you want, though I’m guessing that your mom and Ernesto will probably be putting you to work at Paradise Ranch before you know it.”

Lexi chuckled uneasily. “Maybe. Right now, I just want to see how things go between me and my mom.” And Ernesto too, she thought, realizing he was part of the picture, whether she liked it or not.
