Review for Witch Ball by Adele Elliott

witch ball

My Rating:  4/5

Author: Adele Elliott
Title: Witch Ball

Genre: Young Adult

Background:

Amazon Description:
Truly Moore loves to spend time with her Great Aunt Fleur, a larger than life, quirky old lady who makes a living selling magic charms. The townspeople know Fleur is “different”, a sin in this “Buckle of the Bible Belt”, and many suspect that Aunt Fleur is a witch. The serenity of the town is shattered by the murder of a respected high school track coach, and as the murder becomes more and more difficult to solve, a witch hunt begins. But not all demons have pointy horns and tails, and not all angels have wings.

Witch Ball asks us to be careful who we deify, and who we vilify.

Opinions:

Narration: First Person through Truly

Character Development and Plot:  In some ways, this story reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird. It has discrimination, a trial, and a young girl’s view of the events. However, it revolves around a different discrimination – transgender and transvestites. Truly is a fifteen year old girl on summer break in the South. She adores her aunt and seeks advice from her. At the beginning of the book, Truly has a crush on Eric, a college boy who works at the local library. Things turn upside down with a death of a local boy and then the murder of the track coach. Secrets come out not only in the community but also in Truly’s own family.

The book focuses on sexual orientation and discrimination within the South. Truly grows up during the summer. She must learn to stand up and go against the crowd. She forms her own opinions on what is considered right or wrong. She also learns about forgiveness. In today’s world where gay rights are on the news more often, this book focuses on how society is hard to change their views. It lightly brings in religion – specifically Baptists – as well as the law.

The book is written for young adults but adults might enjoy it, too.

Cover Reveal: Under Contract by Jacquelyn Ayres

Book: Under Contract
Author: Jacquelyn Ayres
Genre: Erotic Romance/Erotic Humor

Charlotte McKendrick is your typical thirty-something stay-at-home mom. She has three beautiful children, a loving family, special friends, and the most wonderful, adoring husband. Her life is a dream.Er . . . let’s try this again.Charlotte McKendrick is not your typical thirty-something stay-at-home mom. Yes, she’s got three beautiful children, a loving family (all of them lingerers—you’ll see), and her friends are special, all right! As far as her wonderful, adoring husband, what a joke! That bastard abandoned her and the kids six months ago.

Now, she will do anything she can to survive and provide for her children. Even if it means signing on the dotted line . . .

Mitch Colton is the CEO of Colton Technologies. Most of his year is spent traveling around the world, bringing companies the latest innovations in automobile technology. He doesn’t have time for a traditional relationship and the BS that comes with it. He doesn’t do the “marriage” thing, the “kid” thing, and he certainly doesn’t do the “falling in love” thing. All that said, he still wants someone to come home to. Someone who will offer everything he wants, and nothing he doesn’t. He realizes loyalty paired with these kinds of demands won’t come cheap. No problem. What he doesn’t realize is that once Charlotte McKendrick signs that dotted line, he’ll be paying with a lot more than money.

I am a Domestic Engineer (born and raised in NJ) whose sole responsibility is to guide three young impressionable kids into becoming phenomenal adults. This challenging, yet rewarding work requires a lot of love (coffee), patience (wine) and determination (periodic exorcisms). I work all of this magic in the beautiful state of New Hampshire. Before becoming a Domestic Goddess (not really), I spent over a decade working in the medical field where I wore more hats than the Queen.

I have had a love for the written word and the great escape it provides since I was a little girl. When I wasn’t reading about people and the places they lived, I was creating my own characters and adventures. Finally, I have been putting a pen to paper allowing my characters to come to life. When I don’t have a pen and paper in hand, you can often find me laughing at the conversations my characters are having in my head.

Book Promotion: Anne Boleyn’s Ghost by Liam Archer

Today’s book promotion comes from Liam Archer and his book called Anne Boleyn’s Ghost. If you like Supernatural novels, take a look below. You might just find another book for your “to read” pile!

Book: Anne Boleyn’s Ghost
Author: Liam Archer
Genre:
Supernatural, Ghost

Publisher: Oashi Publishing
Format: ebook
Release Date:
1/21/2014

Summary:
A true and shocking ghost story about one of England’s most famous queens, Anne Boleyn. Witnessed on numerous occasions throughout the centuries at her historic home, Hever Castle, and the Tower of London, where she was executed, as well as many less familiar places you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find her, Anne Boleyn’s Ghost is considered to be one of the most frequently seen ghosts in the UK.

One day in 2009, a family visited Hever Castle on the 500th anniversary of King Henry the Eighth’s Accession to the Throne. An outing full of twists and turns, their day at the castle had a few surprises in store for them. As they walked through the castle’s ancient rooms, one of the family members – a budding photographer – unknowingly captured the ghost that has mystified so many individuals since her dramatic, and rather gruesome, end.
It is Anne Boleyn like you have never seen her before. Her Ghost no longer dwells in the shadows, but has appeared in her full glory in front of one, unsuspecting photographer’s lens. Almost five hundred years after she was executed at the Tower of London, Anne Boleyn appears not a day older than the day she lost her head.

This is the story of that family’s eventful day at Anne Boleyn’s historic home, Hever Castle, and the mysterious photographs they took…

“Chasing you would be a wasted effort.” Robin waved the half eaten slice before he set the crust back in the box.

Anna slammed the lid on his hand. “What do you mean? I’m not worth the chase?”

“Hey, starving teacher here.” He knocked on the inside of the box and glared at her. “And don’t be ridiculous. Of course you’re worth a chase, but even I can recognize a no win situation regardless if I can’t fully give up on it or you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He was hiding something, besides his hand in the box. “Robin?”

The liquid blue fire in his eyes singed her as he spoke. “I didn’t give the let’s-forget-this-ever-happened-and-just-be-friends speech. I didn’t stay too afraid to see where our relationship might have gone. No win situation.”

Stunned, she gaped at him. “I thought…but you never said…I mean, we’d…”

He just stared at her, face unmoving, his chest rising and falling as his breaths increased. He was, she realized, getting angrier by the second.

She swallowed and tried to find words, any words, to defuse the tension. “I couldn’t bear to think of losing you as my friend. We did the best thing for us.””We did the best thing for you.”

“But you…you agreed with me. You said you didn’t want to risk our friendship either.”

“What the hell could I say?” He shot to his feet, knocking the pizza box to the floor. “You didn’t give me a choice. Either be your friend, only your friend, or leave your life.”

“I never said we couldn’t be friends or you had to leave my life.” She whispered the words. Yet it had been close. The next morning, after one incredible night, she’d told him: Robin, we can’t let this happen again. I love you, as a friend. I don’t want to risk our friendship on meaningless sex. Let’s just put it behind us and stay the way we were before it happened. That’s all I can give you. Please? He’d agreed.

He paced in front of her. “Maybe it’s not the correct time to bring all this up, but it needs to be said. The only reason I agreed was because it was what you wanted. The only reason. Because you asked.”

No. This couldn’t be happening, Robin saying everything she’d wanted to hear before she started dating Doug, before she’d accepted the ring. So Anna shied away from it, as she had then. “Tell me why you said ‘Doug invited Kassie instead of you’ in your shocked tone.”

“Even now you won’t face it.” He muttered a curse which shocked her with the anger behind it. “Will you? You won’t admit maybe we could have—”

“I faced it the morning after. I’m not an idiot, Robin. When you date a woman, it’s like your skydiving adventures. You have a thrill, anything goes, and it’s awesome and you’re on the high of it all. Then you land and it’s over. You never talk to the woman again, let alone have a friendship with her. I didn’t want our friendship to be over. I still don’t. I can’t give more than I am. I can’t.”

“Why, Anna?” He stopped right in front of her, hands on his hips balled into fists. “Why can’t you give more? Because of Doug Dufuss?”

“No. Because I can’t just have sex with you and then watch you leave!”

excerpt

I closed my eyes. I couldn’t look at him and say what I needed to say. I wanted to accept his help, I wanted so badly not to be alone but I was afraid. “I was told not to trust you. I need more time but he’ll come. He’ll eliminate you. That’s what he does.”

He leaned toward me, his tone stern. “You have to live the life you have been given. You did not cause nor deserve what has happened. Don’t force yourself to shut people out before you give them a chance. I’m stronger than you think.” His voice hovered over me. “You can trust me. I’ll never hurt you. And I’m not asking to be your friend. You have no choice in my involvement. Accept my help or not, I’m here to stay.”

My eyes were drawn to his. The pull toward him was overwhelming. I was losing my resolve.

“Why are you afraid of me?” His words turned soft and I wondered if I had heard them at all. “When I come…why are you afraid?”

“I don’t know who to believe.” I sighed. “My mind is being told too many things. I don’t know what I am. What you are. I am afraid for you. I don’t want to be responsible for another life.”

He took my hand and rubbed it against his cheek. So soft, I thought. No stubble. Flashes of Luke’s rough skin against my cheek when he’d finally kissed me slithered through my thoughts. My breath caught. I closed my eyes, trying to regain my own thoughts, to push the hard kiss from my mind. Luke’s words echoed through me. I was your first kiss.

Solomon leaned forward and touched his lips to my cheek, lingering briefly before moving away.

Q & A:

What is the best thing about writing this book?
I watch reality TV as a guilty pleasure. I also work in TV and I wanted to show the way the audience is manipulated into believing a story on TV that may not be true at all. I also wanted to tell a romantic tale with realistic and funny characters.

Where did you get your idea for this story?
I was watching a reality TV show and thinking about how fake it was. I wondered what it would be like to have a real smart and funny woman as a contestant on a dating show, and how that would shake things up.

What would you tell aspiring writers out there?
Write what you’re passionate about and enjoy yourself. Maybe nobody will ever read it or maybe everyone will read it. You won’t know unless you try.

What is your favorite book?
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz

Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate?
hot chocolate, always and with whipped cream.

Anything else that you would like to add?
“Women are smart and funny and full of wit and TV Reality shows usually show them as self absorbed, dumb and humourless. I wanted my book to show women like so many I know. I wanted to imagine a situation where the apple cart of reality TV was flipped over.

The book is available at Amazon.com and Amazon.ca in paperback or for Kindle.”

I want to thank Gary Pearson for allowing me to promote his book on my blog. I hope this post has inspired you to go out and read Slapshot of Love!
