If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like in a house where pets are number one and human visitors should expect to leave with some fur (and sometimes feathers) on their clothes, Something Furry Underfoot is the book for you. Something Furry Underfoot is my humorous, touching memoir about raising a whole bunch of pets my husband wanted, including frogs, iguanas, hedgehogs, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, mice, guinea pigs, mynah birds and tropical fish. And, well, encouraged by his efforts, I admit to bringing in the stray cat, the rescued rabbits and the domestic duckling found wandering in somebody’s front yard. My book contains 50 tips about pets, making it a bit of a pet primer, too. And best of all, some proceeds will benefit animal rescue organizations.

Q & A:

The best thing about writing this book?
I love hearing from readers, especially the ones who say they were inspired to write their own memoir about their pets.

Where did you get your idea for this story?
I began just documenting the pets my husband and I raised over the course of about 19 years, but as I wrote I realized that what I learned from all those pets might just be of help to other people. For example we rescued two guinea pigs, and they were for my 13-year-old step daughter. Now, the average life span of a guinea pig is 5-8 years, but ours lived 11 and 12 years. So that means that I took care of the guinea pigs while the child for whom the pigs were purchased went off to college. That’s why one tip in my book is that whatever pet comes into the home should be one the parents like and are willing to help care for, because the most responsible person is the one that usually fills in.

What would you tell aspiring writers out there?
Write the words “No Doubt” on whatever device you write on. Because the more time you spend doubting yourself–whether what you’re writing will sell, whether it’s your best work, whether it’s even worth doing–gets in the way of getting the job done. Other advice: plan on spending a lot of time marketing.

What is your favorite book?
The civil war trilogy by Jeff and Michael Shaara

Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate?
soda or beer, actually, if it’s available

I want to thank Amy L Peterson for allowing me to promote her book on my blog. I hope this post has inspired you to go out and read Something Furry Underfoot!

In the future, some people known as rogues exhibit supernatural abilities.  That’s not a good thing, however, because the global government hunts them down and executes them, imprisons them, or forces them to become assassins.  Silas is such a rogue.  He lives day by day constantly paranoid about his chances of survival.   So when a wide-eyed hobo offers him a solution to his problems, a mysterious man who the U.N. seems desperate to find, he follows, not having the slightest clue what he’s just stepped into.
Alice hides a dark secret. Many rogues have come and gone in past years, but if people only knew how dark her so-called gift was, they would reject her. Attack her. Kill her. Where can she turn?
Sage is the one that connects them. The one that offers hope to them both. Little is known about him and precious few have seen him. So why is he the only one that the U.N. is afraid of?

Click.  Clack.  Click.  Clack.  Click.  Clack.
Carter cringed with every step as he heard the metallic clashing of the chains that bound his wrists and ankles.  United Nations soldiers surrounded him: one at each side, two behind, and two in front.  They walked with their firearms close to their chests, ready for action at any moment.  He scanned his surroundings, looking for an exit: blank white walls, glass security panels, and grey tile ceiling.  Blue uniformed soldiers guarded every door, and he saw the door to his doom approaching.  He could see no windows looking into the room, only a solid white wall and the grey door, guarded by two soldiers.
                Click.  Clack.  Click.  Clack.
The soldiers stopped at the door.  They exchanged a few words, told the guards of the door why they were there, showed their I.D.s, then entered the room.  It was far less menacing inside than Carter had imagined.  There were none of the flickering bare light bulbs, blood stains, or pungent aromas of decaying bodies that he had conjured in his mind’s eye.  The room, like everything he had ever seen in this building, was remarkably and shockingly bare.  So bare, in fact, that it was creepy.  Was this routine for them?  Was it normal?  Was there nothing extraordinary, nothing even immoral about what they were going to do?
They walked him to the wall on his left, and a touchscreen panel popped up.  One of the soldiers pressed a few buttons and he felt his wrists and legs pin against the wall.
“Sure is a sticky situation, eh?” remarked one of the soldiers to his buddies.  Soldiers often made comments like this, but always to their friends.  Common soldiers were forbidden from talking to prisoners, especially rogues.
Ten gunmen filed in from a door on the opposite wall and lined up with their guns pointed upwards.  Behind them approached an agent, instantly recognizable with his black and blue suit.  He held his military stance with his hands behind his back and recited the appropriate words.
“William Carter Jackson.  You have been found in violation of Sovereign Order 21, which dictates that no biologically outstanding person, defined as those exhibiting phenomena deemed supernatural or otherwise extraordinary, shall be allowed to live, under the equal opportunity statutes of the first United Nations Sovereign Order.  Your crime has been deemed punishable by death, and will therefore be carried out in a swift and humane manner, by firing squad, authorized by this Agent Sebastian Jefferson.  Do you have any last words?”
Carter lifted his head and established eye contact with the agent.
                “Yeah, I do.”
He waited for the soldiers to shift, to listen to what last words he had.  None of them budged, but that didn’t change what he had to say.
“What’s so wrong with having good hearing?”
                “Ready arms,” said the agent.
The boy refused to break eye contact.  He looked the agent in the eye, determined in a last act of ideological rebellion that they would not ignore him.
All ten rifles fired at once.  Blood spattered the wall behind the boy and spread into pools on the ground.  The force broke the wall’s magnetism, leaving the boy lying upon the ground.
One of the soldiers who had escorted the boy knelt down and took a look at him.
“Affirmative,” he said.  “We’re clear for the clean-up crew.”
I’ve found that a lot of mainstream music (music with words) distracts me. So instead I listen to soundtrack music. I actually made this playlist on Spotify, so you can probably look it up. I named it “Soundtrack Awesomeness.”

Book Promotion: Born Broken by Steve R.

Today’s book promotion comes from Steve R. and his book called Born Broken. If you like autobiographies, take a look below. You might just find another book for your “to read” pile!

born broken

Book: Born Broken
Author: Steve R.
Autobiography, Non-Fiction

Publisher: Createspace
Format: Paperback, ebook
Release Date: 1/1/2014

Born Broken is the story of my struggle with alcoholism and my journey to recovery. It’s the story of growing up in a poor white neighborhood called Okieville with no way out and no hope for a better tomorrow. As you travel through this story with me, you will discover how alcohol took control of my life while I was still young and vulnerable. Yes, most of my struggles stem from chronic alcohol abuse, a disorder that this story will expose for its true nature. It will reveal insights I gained during my battle with this deadly disease. It tells how God grasped my trembling hands one desperate night and summoned me out of the abyss. Since that night, I have been struggling with alcoholism one day and one step at a time.
Born Broken starts during a time when many believed we only gained from life what we earned through will and determination. I view my world from a very different perspective than the one I grew up with. In the 1950’s and early 60’s, there was a belief that if you received a high school diploma, and if you worked hard enough, you could reach whatever goals you set your mind to. But I was to discover that the path is not that straight. Mine wasn’t anyway. Sometimes in life things happen for a reason, though that reason may not be apparent.
From the early moments of my birth, everything that happened in my life was inevitable. I needed to experience what I experienced the way that I did. Though I didn’t know it at the time, I was on a mission of self-discovery that needed to be accomplished at any cost. This path of self-discovery would have a profound impact on my life, altering its direction many times. This book focuses on lost directions. It is the chronicle of my winding path.
I pray that my story will impart a message of hope and courage to others still suffering from alcoholism. I hope that readers will experience a greater understanding of God’s Mercy and Grace, and a greater understanding of their own capabilities. It doesn’t matter where you came from in life—it’s where you are headed that’s important.
The world of alcoholism is an abyss. It waits patiently, and it devours everyone who ventures through its gates. Without a powerful and merciful intervention, its victims cannot escape. Once, maybe twice in a person’s life, there appears an opportunity with the power to brush against the soul. It can alter what a person is destined to become. It can leave an impression on broken hearts and injured souls. These are the evidence, the footprints that God leaves behind. I am one of those blessed individuals who have emerged from the abyss through God’s Grace to share His Merciful and Gracious message.

The journey of pregnancy brings hope, joy, and love for the expecting mother. The hope of giving birth to a new life. The joy of feeling this new life grow inside of her. The love that starts with a test that doesn’t ever end. Dreams for the unborn child flood the new mother’s mind, as well as those around her. Each step of the pregnancy is a cherished moment. The anticipation of meeting her cherished baby builds from the very first month and ends after birth.

This is the story of one mother and how a few words changed her life forever. How a piece of her faded when she heard these words: “There’s no heartbeat.” When RaeBeth Buda laid in the hospital in labor, she and her husband heard those dreaded words.

Come and join Dakota’s Birthday Celebration with us.

Around 1:00 on the morning of the 27th, a person from the OB floor called my name. I motioned him over. He grabbed the wheelchair and pushed me through the halls. Mom and Greg followed closely behind. When we finally got to the sixth floor, they took me into triage room one.

“Hello, what brings you in?” The woman asked as she came in.

“I think we’re about to have a baby.” I answered her with a smile.

Why else would we be there? It’s not everyday people like to hang out in the OB part of the hospital for no reason at all.

“Okay, you’ll need to strip from your waste down. I’ll need a sample of your urine here in this cup and put the rest in the plastic bin. I’ll be back in a few minutes to hook you up.” She instructed as she pointed to the small toilet in the room.

It was a good thing I had to go. I looked over at my mom and Greg as I said, “Hope I can do this without peeing all over the place.” Of course, I tried to make both laugh and succeeded. As I pulled down my panties, I noticed a small amount of blood. My mom and Greg noticed too.

“The bloody show. You’re definitely not going anywhere any time soon.” My mom said with a smile. “We’re gonna have a baby!” She chanted excitedly.

The only thing I could come back with was, “Or she’s in distress.”

“Don’t think like that. All will be fine. Have some faith.” My mom said to calm me down and comfort me.

Once I was ready to get on to the bed, I slowly made my way with Greg’s help. I laid back and the contractions were much stronger. Around one in the morning, the nurse finally came back in, shut the door, and walk to the left side of the bed. She grabbed a strap and placed it on my belly. “This will monitor the contractions, which I see you’re definitely having.”

Once the strap was in place, she fiddled with the machine for a few minutes and said, “Let’s find that heartbeat.”

She grabbed the gel, put a good bit on my belly, and grabbed the Doppler. Once she spread out the gel, she started searching for Dakota’s heartbeat. I couldn’t wait to hear it. It was only a matter of seconds before I’d hear it.

She kept moving around on my belly. I pointed to right side of my belly button and said, “This is usually where my doctor found her heartbeat without a problem.” She moved the device there. We still didn’t hear anything.

After another squirt of gel on my belly, she searched again. My heart raced and panic overtook me. Something was wrong. I could feel it. I glanced at my mom and Greg. They were worried too. I saw Greg swallow hard and turned my attention back to the nurse.

“Sometimes it takes time to find the heartbeat. The baby could be lying with her back towards yours, which makes it hard for the machine to pick it up. I’m going to get an ultrasound machine. That will definitely pick it up.” The nurse said, as she placed the Doppler back and walked out of the room.

My mom saw worry and panic cross my face. She stood up from her chair and walked over to me. “Let’s pray” she said. My mom, Greg, and I said a quick prayer while we waited on the nurse. Within a few minutes, the door opened and the nurse pushed in an ultrasound machine. She plugged it in and turned it on.

As she stood to the right of me, Greg and my mom were on my left. My mom held my leg and Greg took a hold of my hand. I eagerly wanted the nurse to put a fire under her ass and hurry up. It seemed like everyone and everything started moving in slow motion. The nurse began looking at Dakota through the ultrasound.

At first, I couldn’t tell what was on the screen. What I noticed was that she was not trying to hear her heart but to see it. That was when it came into view. My daughter’s heart was not beating. I rubbed my eyes, thinking they were playing a trick on me. The nurse stood up and walked out of the room without saying a word.

Moments later, three other medical personnel walked into the room. They whispered in their small circle where we couldn’t hear and continued looking at the screen. The room was quiet. I heard the ultrasound machine running and could have heard a pin drop. I knew my baby was gone by the look on their faces, but no one said anything.

“Ummm, hello? Someone tell me what’s going on?” I yelled. I was tired of it. I knew what this meant, but I wanted them to say it. It was not final until someone had said it.

The doctor closest to me said, “I’m sorry. She’s gone.”

Book Promotion: Dreams of a Nobody by Sean Thompson

 dreams of nobody

Book: Dreams of a Nobody
Author: Sean Thompson
YA, fantasy, action and adventure, coming of age

Publisher: Sean Thompson
Format: ebook
Release Date:

Dreams of a Nobody (part 1) is the beginning of the story of Amos Kieran, a young boy chosen by his king to play a key role in bringing world peace. All Amos has to do is kill a few hundred or a few thousand people (however many the king needs to create his vision of peace) at the cost of his own life—a small price to pay for the good of the world.

This first part follows Amos on his last night before his training as King Maximino’s chief assassin begins in earnest. Amos sits in a field counting stars, his favorite and only pastime, thinking about the childhood he’s already lost, and trying to figure out a way to change his destiny—a task he fears is like using his imagination one last time. His last night of peace is interrupted by an unusual dove who loves the spotlight, and a man, who could very well be Death (or someone much worse), that takes Amos to task for the crimes he’ll commit against humanity. Tonight, Amos faces the very real possibility of losing his life before he loses it to his job.

What choices will Amos make? And how will he go about trying to change the world and his circumstances? Can he?

Genre: Historical Romance

the frost of springtime

To rescue her was to rescue his own soul.

On a cold Parisian night, Vicomte Aleksender de Lefèvre forges an everlasting bond with a broken girl during her darkest hour, rescuing her from a life of abuse and misery. Tormented by his own demons, he finds his first bit of solace in sheltering little Sofia Rose.

But when Aleksender is drawn away by the Franco-Prussian war, the seasons pass. And in that long year, Sofia matures into a stunning young woman—a dancer with an understanding of devotion and redemption far surpassing her age.

Alongside his closest friend, Aleksender returns home to find that “home” is gone—replaced by revolution, bloodshed, betrayal—and a love always out of reach. Scarred inside and out, he’s thrust into a world of sensuality and violence—a world in which all his hours have now grown dark, and where only Sofia might bring an end to the winter in his heart.

Inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune, The Frost of Springtime is a poignant tale of revolution, redemption, and the healing power of love.

Rachel L. Demeter lives in the beautiful hills of Anaheim, California with Teddy, her goofy lowland sheepdog, and high school sweetheart of ten years. She enjoys writing dark, edgy romances that challenge the reader’s emotions and examine the redeeming power of love.

Imagining stories and characters has been Rachel’s passion for longer than she can remember. Before learning how to read or write, she would dictate stories while her mom would jot them down for her. She has a special affinity for the tortured hero and unconventional romances. Whether sculpting the protagonist or antagonist, she always ensures that every character is given a soul.

Rachel strives to intricately blend elements of romance, suspense, and horror. Some common themes her stories never stray too far from: forbidden romance, soul mates, the power of love to redeem, mend all wounds, and triumph over darkness. Her dream is to move readers and leave an emotional impact through her words.

Bête Noire’s walls shook as a gust of wind moaned in the distance. Soft and shameful sobs accompanied the ambiance with haunting precision. The child sank to the crutch of her knees—defeated, starved for food and warmth—as if she might escape the world in that way.

Moved by her humiliation far more than he dared admit, the dark stranger removed his bowler hat and crouched to her level. He replaced the hat after running an unsteady hand through his hairline. His chest lurched as the child adjusted the torn tatters of her clothing. Swishing off his frock coat, he draped the material over her body like it was a security blanket.

She grasped the wool with her good hand, plummeted onto her bottom, and pulled both legs against her chest. Her face sank from eye-line as she hid below a fortress of upright knees. Tiny and perfectly helpless, the abundance of thick folds seemed to devour her whole.

“Cold night,” he whispered.

“Thank you, m-monsieur.”

The man softened at the tragic sight that lay before him; icicles, which had too long clung to his chest, deftly thawed and melted away. He felt an incredible pain, a sincere compassion and aching sympathy, which he’d believed he no longer possessed. Despite his better judgment and a lifetime of indifference, his heart broke.

Damnation. He longed to turn his cheek in apathy and disgust. He yearned to feel numb to the girl’s pain and loneliness. He wanted to hate the child—to despise the child—for having invaded his sole sliver of peace: darkness.

Tucked within a foreign part of his heart, only emptiness had ever existed. A terrible and twisted emptiness. And for seventeen of his twenty-seven years, he’d filled that internal void with darkness.

Eyes of emerald locked with eyes of sapphire, each pair searching the secrets of its counterpart’s soul. He could sense the girl’s will to live, to simply survive the world and all of its cruelties, as if it was a tangible thing. And, within that lucid moment, a recollection from his own childhood emerged. The emptiness eased and lifted. His heart pounded as a montage of horrors resurrected—just barely …

A whisper of half-sobbed words: “Life is pain. Love is a pretty lie.” Empty and burning tears. A seductive glint. Steel, cold and rusted, plunged into a slate of creamy flesh. A distorted prayer: “Do not love the world or anything in it. The world and its desires pass away. But those who do the will of God shall live forever.” A moment of silence followed by a pair of beautiful, breathless lungs—

The jumbled tangle of memories disappeared as quickly as they’d come. Once more the emptiness returned. But one truth remained—long ago, something had happened. Something unutterable. Something his conscience and consciousness had chosen to forget.

And then, miraculously, for the first conceivable time in the man’s life, a ray of hope shined through his darkness.

Perhaps the girl could help him find himself.

Perhaps two orphaned souls could unite as one.

Consumed by his sudden revelation, the dark figure lifted his hand and attempted to brush a stray curl from her eyes. Jerking free of his touch, she flinched out of his reach—just as he’d expected she might—behaving like a mongrel who’d only known beatings.

He retreated with a dejected sigh and shook his face. “Might I know your name, ma petit?”

“Sofia …” Her voice was little more than a whisper and a true breath of fresh air.

“Good to know you, my dearest Sofia.” The man inclined his head, gave a charmingly crooked grin, and clasped a palm to his heart. Aware that everything had changed, it beat against his ribcage at a rapid pace, the rhythm hard and strong. “I am Alek…”

Praise for the book

“I am astonished at this being Rachel L. Demeter’s debut work, for in form and style, it is very much a tour de force. A riveting story of love and courage in the aftermath of a brutal war, the author brilliantly juxtaposes the hazing splendor of French nobility and the impassioned elegance of two people in love, despite all the world’s oppositions. The title is, in a sense, a representation of change: the beginning of a new spring with La Belle Époque and the transition into a new era, for the world and our protagonists.

The wistful loveliness of the setting paints a picture of a crying France, blending in with the dynamic romance perfectly. Or rather, it does not merely blend in the background as much as glitters like the brightest jewel, shining with a vibrancy that makes one want to relieve the halcyon days of grand old Paris. I was captivated by the setting, the lush writing of Rachel L. Demeter, and the subtle expressiveness of the characters, which all compelled me to research more of the historical background, of the 1871 Paris Commune, through which this story is made more infinitely dearer.” – Buried Under Romance

“We are in awe. The Frost of Springtime is a MUST HAVE! Despite that we loved the true facts, we fell instantly in love with the story. It was dark, emotionally devastating, and sensual. The innocence between the two main characters was beautiful and their love grew so strong throughout the story with such grace. One of us even cried while reading The Frost of Springtime. We loved the cover, we loved the writing style, and we adored the characters. We fell in love, really hard.” – Divas Book Blog

“This novel is intricately detailed and wonderfully written! Opening with a heartbreaking scene, I was immediately drawn to the story of Aleksender and his Sofia. Of course, as the story moved on, other enchanting characters helped to make this poignant book complete. The author has blended historical facts with fiction skillfully, and presented several narratives flawlessly. It’s beautiful! I loved it!” – Romancebookworm’s Reviews

“I absolutely love this book. The Frost of Springtime shows how love and tragedy go hand in hand and that love can actually be more powerful than anything. I have found that most books do not hit this point right on the nail like this one does. It’s a Historical Romance and let me just tell you this is one book I couldn’t put down.” – Magic Within The Pages

“WOW!! The Frost of Springtime is a powerful, epic love story unlike anything I’ve ever read before. The emotional and visual/sensory depth is astounding. I felt Aleksender and Sofia’s connection from beginning to end.

Aleksender’s path to healing was at times breathtaking and heartbreaking. This is a hero who loves his woman with every last breath, every fiber of his being… and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for her. AMAZING cast of secondary characters as well… a ‘villain’ who actually leaves you morally torn! Beautifully written (loved the vivid imagery and descriptions!), dark, unusual, rich with history, epic scope, and a soul deep love that only comes once in a lifetime… Brava!!!” – Sivonna, an advanced reader

Book: Deviltry Afoot

Publisher: Publisher Infinity
Format: paperback, kindle, nook
Release Date:

Seeking justice for her daughters murder Tina must seek answers in the supernatural realm. Terror is spreading over the town. Love is pitted against a dreadful force.  When Donald was in flesh he was evil, now in spirit his cruel nature has grown even darker.  Can the power of mother love defeat such an enemy?

I wanted to write a supernatural story and incorporate several stand alone ghost stories into it.   As the darkness takes over the town many townsfolk relate their own experiences with the unknown.

I have been interested in the supernatural and “true ghost” stories since as a child my dad would relate them. I in turn would ask everyone I came in contact with about the subject.  It seems if you start such a discussion everyone makes a contribution.  It is like tales told around the campfire.

I am a big fan of Stephen King

*Warning: Contains adult situations and language

Narration: Third Person – Multiple

Character Development: The story mainly follows Phoebe and Aidan. Phoebe has just moved to Echo Falls. When the reader first meets her, the reader discovers that she has been running from someone for a while and that she is in danger. She first meets Aidan (who is a cop) when she is attacked. There’s an instant attraction. However, both characters have secrets. Phoebe’s traumatic past gives her trust issue and the need to keep running. But, she likes Echo Falls and eventually loves Aidan. Can she overcome her past to stay where she wants to? Or will her misfortune drive her away?

Aidan is a cop and the alpha male for the pack of werewolves situated in Echo Falls. Lately, a string of murders involving werewolves have plagued the town. He saves Phoebe and becomes infatuated with her. However, he knows she is hiding something from him, and he hides the fact that he is a werewolf – at first. Aidan’s instincts are conflicted between pack/cop business and this mysterious woman.

They both must learn to trust each other if they are going to survive.

Plot Development/Flow: The story moves along well and is a fast read for me. I have read the second book before this one a while ago, so it didn’t hinder my reading experience. The only negative thought I have for reading this book is that the mystery isn’t surprising – at least for me. Despite that, I enjoyed the book.

Standalone or Part of a Series: First book in a series – but can be read as a standalone.
