Book Info

Ted Milo, until recently the Charles Dickens of obit writers, is dislodged from his carefree new life by a bizarre collision of homicides and hemorrhoids in the fancy Los Angeles suburb of Friendly Lake. Actually…not so friendly, Ted and his wife, Liv, soon discover.

Ted has ditched his long newspaper career to embrace the nouveau riche life he’d always ridiculed after inheriting a fortune from a distant relative. He is floating blissfully, contemplating the fruits of wealth, little on his fiftyish mind beyond bladder control, when a visit to a physician turns him into a sleuth with cold-blooded murders to solve.

“You’re doing this why, because the Navy SEALS aren’t hiring?” chides Liv when learning she’s now married to Sam Spade. “And your dream of playing center field for the Dodgers—dashed?”

Every gumshoe requires a “tomato,” though, and Liv is Ted’s when bodies hit the slab in this twisty mystery that exposes the warty underside of seemingly tranquil suburbia.

Chapter 19: Cocktails and Dreams

L’Wren entered Bacchanal Jake’s with two of her girlfriends. While their intention was to have fun and enjoy the attention of guys, her mission was to see Kevin Banovic again. She knew he worked there and, without alerting her friends to her plan, casually chose Jake’s as the hangout spot for the evening.

She hated the way they’d left things. Why did she care what he thought of her? He was just some guy—some guy who cared enough to stand up for her and got hurt in the process. She carried around immense guilt, and he’d made her feel worst when she tried to apologize. She had no idea what she was going to say to him. She just knew that she had to see him again.

They ordered drinks and found a booth. L’Wren’s eyes combed the room, her breath unsteady, her palms sweaty and her stomach in knots. Maybe he had the night off.

L’Wren’s friends noticed her distraction.

“Hey, what’s going on with you?” one friend asked.

“Nothing.” She smiled nervously.

A couple of guys came over with drinks for the girls. They began chatting them up. L’Wren was not interested. She just smiled and nodded and kept an eye out for Kevin.

Her hopes began to fade after an hour. L’Wren was about ready to leave when she spotted Kevin. She took a deep breath. The air in the room was getting tight again. She watched as he flirted with a woman at the bar. The scene reminded her of Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail, minus the bar theatrics.

She felt a twinge in the pit of her stomach that surprised her. The guy next to her said something, but she didn’t hear him. Her mind was focused on Kevin. Mentally she tried to muster courage and find something to say to him.

Her legs felt heavy as she stood and walked over to the bar. With every step her heart pounded harder and faster. As she got closer, she straightened her spine, lifted her head, and steadied her breath. She walked straight towards the end of the bar where he stood still chatting up the brunette, who looked like she was ready to ravish him. Kevin said something to her, and she smiled, then tossed her long mane, retrieved her cell phone, and touched hers with his.

Kevin stood up and looked at L’Wren. The brunette shot her a menacing look.

“What can I get you?” he asked as if she was a complete stranger.

“I just thought I’d come over and introduce myself,” she heard herself say. New-formed confidence took over. “Hi, I’m L’Wren.” She extended her arm.

The brunette’s eyes switched between them. She eventually walked away without saying a word.

“What are you doing?” Kevin asked.

“Starting over.”

Kevin was unsure where she was going with this but played along. “Kevin, nice to meet you.” He gently shook her hand.

“I’d like a martini, please. Shaken not stirred.” She perched herself on the bar stool.

They looked at each other for a moment, and then started to laugh at the obvious James Bond reference.

It was late when L’Wren’s friends said their goodbyes and left her at the bar.

Kevin served drinks, and then returned his attention to her.

It was last call when Kevin walked her to her car. “You okay to drive, or should I call for a cab?”

“Kevin,” she leaned in close to him, “when you weren’t looking, I ordered diet Sprite from the other bartender.”

“What about the martini?”

“I don’t drink martinis. I sent it to my girlfriend.”

“Oh, I feel so duped, seriously?”

She nodded affirmative.

“Since we’re confessing … I saw you the minute you walked into Jake’s.”

“Liar! You were nowhere around.”

“I was in the back room … I wanted to see if you were waiting for someone.”

“I don’t believe you. You can’t stand to be duped.” She laughed.

Kevin watched her as she got into her white Prius V and drove away.

L’Wren looked at him in the rearview mirror and smiled. That turned out better than she’d expected.

As she pulled into her driveway, she hummed ‘Kokomo’, the theme song from Cocktail. The house was dark, and she knew no one was home. Leighann had gone to the game with Zax, and who knew where Savi was. L’Wren smiled as she thought about Zax and Leighann. Those Banovic boys had charm. If Zax was anything like his brother, Leighann was a lucky girl. Just then she heard footsteps and turned around quickly.

“Jeff! You scared me.” She playfully punched him.

“Hey, baby.” He kissed her. “Here let me.” He took the keys and opened the door for her.

They began turning on the lights.

“I didn’t realize we were supposed to get together tonight,” she said, feeling uneasy.

“Do I need an appointment to see my girl?”

“No … if I knew you were coming over, I would have gotten here sooner.” She busied herself in the kitchen.

“Where were you?”

“Traffic on the 405 was a bitch.”

“Where did you say you were again?”

“Out with a couple of friends. No place special.”

“You could have called me. I would have gone to no place special with you.”

“Jeff, we talked about this. You can’t have a cow every time I go out with my friends.”

“You never invite me anywhere with your friends. Are you ashamed of me?” Jeff towered over her.

“Don’t be silly. It was just us girls. None of them had their boyfriends with them.”

“Did you have a good time?”

“Yes.” She tried to walk away from him, but she was trapped between the counter and Jeff.

He boxed her in with his arms. “Did guys hit on you?”

“What? No.” She tried to move his arm, but it was firmly planted against the counter. “Why don’t we go in the living room and talk,” she suggested, trying to sound calm.

“Why can’t you look me in the eye and tell me that guys didn’t hit on you?”

“Jeff, I think you should leave.”

“Is he coming over? Is that why you want me to leave?” Jeff raised his voice.

L’Wren knew what was coming next. She braced herself for him to either punch her in the gut or pull her hair. He wouldn’t slap her face; he didn’t like to leave visual bruises. He couldn’t have his friends know that he beat up on his girlfriend. He was quarterback of the football team and had a reputation to uphold. She gripped the counter as he yanked on her hair, tugging her head back, causing her to bump her head on the overhead cupboard.

“I have absolutely no qualms about putting a bullet through your brain right now,” Savi said calmly.

Jeff turned around to face the business end of Savi’s shiny silver revolver. L’Wren gasped. Something in her eyes told him that she meant it.

“As far as I’m concerned, you broke into my daughter’s house. I came home and found you roughing her up … a plausible story … for the police.”

Jeff held her gaze.

She clicked the gun. “Bounce.”

Jeff did as he was told. Savi walked out behind him and locked the door. L’Wren was still shivering in the kitchen.

“Where do you find those losers?” Savi asked casually. She set the gun down on the counter and poured herself a glass of wine.

L’Wren stared at the gun. She had never seen one up close before. “Why do you have a gun?”

“Target practice.” Savi drank the wine and poured another. This time she also poured a glass for L’Wren, whose hands were shaking so badly that she could barely hold the glass.

“I don’t want to be around it.”

“Then move out.” Savi picked up the offending object and walked out into the living room.

L’Wren followed. “This is my house. You’re a guest.”

Savi placed the gun in her Dior handbag.

“What if Leighann finds it?” L’Wren continued.

“It’s not a dildo, for Christ’s sake.” Savi headed to her room and shut the door.

Review for Starter House by Sonja Condit

starter house

My Rating: 3.5/5

Author:  Sonja Condit
Title: Starter House

Genre:  Paranormal

Background:

Amazon Description:
Promising talent Sonja Condit makes her debut with Starter House, an eerie and mesmerizing tale about a young couple whose new house holds deadly secrets from the past, sure to appeal to fans of Heart-Shaped Box and The Thirteenth Tale.

From the moment Lacey sees the house with the beautiful wood staircase, she knows she’s found her dream home. Growing up rootless with her flighty mother, Ella Dane, a self-proclaimed psychic, Lacey is determined to give her unborn baby the stability she never had.

But shortly after she and her husband, Eric, move in, the warm and welcoming house becomes cold and dark. There is something malevolent within these walls that wants to hurt her unborn child—a terrifying presence that only she can sense. And there is Drew, a demanding and temperamental little boy who mysteriously appears when Lacey is alone.

To protect her unborn child and save her family, Lacy must discover the truth about her dream house and the troubled Drew—a decades-old mystery involving secrets, violence, and guilt—and confront an evil that has lingered in wait for years.

Opinions:

My Short Summary:
Lacey and her husband, Eric, are on hunt for a new house. With a baby on the way, Lacey can’t wait to have a place to call her own and prepare for the baby. Lacey falls in love with a certain house. Although warned not to take the house by the realtor, they buy it anyway. Lacey right away sees a little boy, Drew, around the house and around the property. She soon learns that he is a ghost and can go from being sweet to an angry child in a split second. Learning that the house has a history of murders and deaths, especially with babies and children, Lacey soon regrets moving into this “perfect” house. Unfortunately, Eric doesn’t believe in such things and is very adamant about staying there. “They can’t afford a new home.” Things start to go wrong and the marriage becomes strained. Can Lacey keep her marriage and baby while living in this house? Can she find out why Drew is stuck there, and why there are so many deaths?

Narration: The story is written in third person mainly following Lacey, although Eric and Lex (his client) share their perspectives, as well.

Character Development: Throughout the book, the reader becomes very familiar with Lacey’s love of children and Eric’s rational side of things. Over all, I don’t believe any of the characters really grow by the end of the novel – at least, not in a drastic way that would be expected. Perhaps it is how the book ended that makes me feel that. (I won’t go into details here because it would be a spoiler.) Other main characters in the book include: Lacey’s mother who is considered crazy with her crystals and herbs; Lex who is a client of Eric’s trying to gain custody of his daughter; Drew the little boy who haunts the house and the families that lived there; and Harry who is the neighbor who sells them the house and who is related to the hauntings.

Plot Development/Flow:
The story is what I would call slightly spooky, not a gory horror novel. The book centers on the mystery of the past murders and how they might be related today. It also focuses on trying to find out who Drew is and how he plays a part in everything that happens. The ending could have used a few more pages to at least to wrap up everything that happened. I didn’t really see the characters’ reactions to the climax which is what I was expecting. Everything fell neatly into place without any problems.

Standalone or Part of a Series:
This is a standalone novel.

Q & A:

Interview can be found here

Q: You wrote three screenplays before writing your first novel. What inspired you to switch?

A: I love the screenplay format. I tend to create fairly cinematic scenes, and those work great for screenplays. But since a proper script contains only what the camera can see, the format is very limiting. Any thoughts inside a character have to manifest as something visible, or they’re cut out. I wanted to explore my character’s minds more deeply.

Q: Why did you write this book?

A: Nikola Tesla was such a fascinating man. He invented many of the technologies we use today, but he had a blind spot for business that ultimately hurt him badly. I thought it would be fun to give him the hero treatment, which set things up nicely for Thomas Edison to be the villain.

Q: What is it like being a author? Do you enjoy it?

A: I love it! Being able to create something out of nothing is really satisfying. And to share your creation with others and have them get enjoyment from it? Awesome.

Q: In Einstein Must Die, it seemed like Madelaine was your favorite character. Am I right? Was there any special connection there?

A: Nice call! I do have a young daughter, and I thought of her often as I was writing Madelaine’s scenes. I’m sure some of that fatherly love comes across.

Q: This is the first book of your Fate Of Nations series. What can we expect in the future?

A: I wanted the series to have a wide, epic feel. So there’s a lot that gets set up in this first book, but not fully explored. How the war will play out on a global scale, for example. How Madelaine will adjust to her new life. Each book will have a primary focus on one historical figure. This one was Tesla, but the next will be Jack Daniels.

Q: Will that be your next book released?

A: No, I’m wrapping up now on my second book. It’s a science fiction book called Lawgivers. Law enforcement has evolved and been given new powers to more efficiently deal with crime. Attorneys are judge, jury and executor in one. Police officers are free to investigate and apprehend at will. Working together as a pair, they are called Lawgivers. When a young girl stumbles into their office after witnessing her father’s murder, attorney Sarah and her cop partner Robert seek the murderer but soon find they’re on the trail of a vast conspiracy that revolves around a new drug that vaccinates against all genetic diseases. Going up against its creator, Integrated Life Sciences, would be the case of a lifetime. But against ILS and its shadowy backers, even the law offers little protection.

Q: Sounds great! Tesla came across as quite the eccentric genius. Will he be back?

A: He won’t be the main character, but yes, definitely.

Q: Did you do any interesting research for this novel?

A: Quite a lot, actually. Even though it’s an alternative history, where things don’t play out as they really did, I wanted the details to feel real. So I learned a lot about all sorts of things. The internal structure of zeppelins. Naval warfare tactics in 1890. All about the lives of Tesla, Edison, Mark Twain and Winston Churchill. For the town of New Haven, CT, I found the census records from 1910, complete with hand drawn maps of the city. It was quite fun.

Q: Do you plan out your scenes before writing? Or do you tend to just create as you go?

A: I’m a planner, but it’s important to leave enough breathing room for inspiration to strike. Before getting started, I’d map out the major points I want to hit, but I left a good bit open in between the main beats. I’m glad I did too. It would be really easy to get halfway through and only then realize something wasn’t working.

Q: It’s a striking cover. Who made it?

A: Thank you. I found a Serbian artist, Darko Tomic, who took my general ideas and made them real. Since Tesla was Serbian, that was a nice connection. Tesla is a hero in Serbia, and is on their currency. Darko sent me their equivalent of a US $10 bill with Tesla’s face on it. I have it framed over my desk.

I want to thank Chris Kohout for allowing me to promote his book on my blog. I hope this post has inspired you to go out and read Einstein Must Die!

Her traumatic past leaves her with no desire for a relationship—until Grayson James walks through her door. He’s not the type of man you can easily say “no” to. Becca can’t quite understand the pull she feels toward him. But then his controlling nature starts to push her away—and into Ray McNeil’s comforting arms. Which is right where Ray has always wanted her.Who will Becca choose?

Will she finally give in to her feelings for Ray, or continue the tumultuous relationship with Grayson? Only one thing is certain—either choice will mean saying goodbye to caution.

Warning: This book contains some disturbing situations, dubious consent, strong language and violence.

10% of the proceeds from this book will be donated to YWCAUSA.org to help abused women and children

I am a Domestic Engineer (born and raised in NJ) whose sole responsibility is to guide three young impressionable kids into becoming phenomenal adults. This challenging, yet rewarding work requires a lot of love (coffee), patience (wine) and determination (periodic exorcisms). I work all of this magic in the beautiful state of New Hampshire. Before becoming a Domestic Goddess (not really), I spent over a decade working in the medical field where I wore more hats than the Queen.

I have had a love for the written word and the great escape it provides since I was a little girl. When I wasn’t reading about people and the places they lived, I was creating my own characters and adventures. Finally, I have been putting a pen to paper allowing my characters to come to life. When I don’t have a pen and paper in hand, you can often find me laughing at the conversations my characters are having in my head.

please add excerpt of your choice

Meet Becca, Grayson, Ray & Hazel

Grayson

1.  When you contrived with Ray to share Becca, did you not consider, knowing your nature, that it might be problem?

I don’t know what the bloody hell I was thinking besides the fact that I couldn’t lose her! I mean, I was completely snookered. Everything sounds brilliant when your rat arsed! I just . . .  I really screwed up and I knew I had to do something drastic to attempt to win her back. In all honesty, I didn’t completely factor in the consequences of sharing her with Ray because I didn’t think the arsehole really stood a chance!

2.  You seem to fall for Morgan almost as hard as you fall for Becca, is the ‘ready made family’ part of the attraction?

I was looking for a nice, long overdue, visit with my aunt and a great weekend skiing with my mates. I was not looking to fall in love and I most certainly was not looking to become a father. I never even considered having children—ever. But, my God, you’ve all met Morgan—how could anyone not fall in love with that girl? She’s a clever, funny little thing and I absolutely adore her! So, no, a ‘ready-made family’ was not part of the attraction but the love I feel for them made me ready for a family!

Becca

1.  Obviously you had reservations about Gray and Ray’s plan to share your time, but all that aside, you had permission to enjoy two men! How much fun was that??

            Can they hear me?

No. They are in the other room.

            Security hasn’t been in here?

            No. Why do you ask?

Umm . . . you have met Grayson, right?

Oh. Quite right. No. No one’s been in here but us.

Ok. Let’s just say my Slip n’ Slide never saw a dry moment and thoroughly enjoyed the extensive playtime!

2.  How do you cope with the restrictions 24 hour protection must impose?

Well, it definitely hasn’t been easy—that’s for sure! I’ve had to let go—a lot! I’m very impatient. When I need to do something, I need to do it now! Waiting for my detail sucks sometimes. I’m blessed to have Melissa though! She makes it a bit more normal for me. With the exception of the handful I’ve gotten close to, well, it’s just—awkward! I mean how would you feel if there were people outside of your bedroom door every minute—hearing everything? I couldn’t be quiet with Grayson if I tried! So I had to ‘let go’. Now I just think of it like this, ‘Well, at least I’m keeping them all closer to God!’

3.  Do you feel any guilt that you and Ray could have probably stayed friends if not for the arrangement?

That’s the worst part of this. I was bound to lose one of them. Ray has been my best friend for about five years now. We’ve done everything together. I have to believe in my heart of hearts that eventually, things will mend between us. We love each other very much and on such a different level. I can’t see how anything can wipe that all away. But to answer your question—yes, the guilt is unbearable. I’ve handled this whole situation very poorly.

Ray

1.  Why did you wait until Becca was happy with another man before deciding to declare your feelings?

Oh, let me guess who you got that information from! That prick is unbelievable!

Well, we’re only going by what we’ve been told in general. There’s not much evidence to tell us anything different.

There are two sides to every story.

Tell us yours then.

Soon.

Why so secretive?

We’ve all got our secrets, lady.

(Ladies, I believe Ray just dished out one of his wink/air kiss combinations at me. I may need to change my knickers!)

To answer your question though, I didn’t wait for another man to show up. I’ve always told Becca how I feel . . . in my own way. I love Becca with all my heart but she is one oblivious woman!

2.  How do you manage the fact that you actually like Grayson, even though you hate him for having Becca?

I did like him when I first met him. I tolerate him now—barely. I’ll tell you why I do tolerate him, though. That dude is a loose cannon! When Becca has finally had enough of his bullshit and realizes he’s not the man for her, I’ll be waiting—with open arms. Just you wait and see!

People might say the same thing about you, Ray. Call you a loose cannon.

(Ray has just given me, what I believe Becca calls, his ‘sit n’ spin’ face and is now leaving. I have to admit—his arse does do wonders for those jeans. I may or may not have just fallen out of my chair from leaning to keep a good watch on that arse!)

Hazel

1.  Did you have hopes from the beginning that Becca and Grayson would fall in love?

Well, I had hopes that they would like each other and maybe want to date. But I was not expecting all of this. Honestly, I think it’s been all too much for Becca—given her history.

2.  When Becca and Grayson argued who did you deep down feel most protective of?

Such a simple question, dear, and yet so complicated. You know I raised Gracie from the time he was fifteen so he’s like the son I never had. Becca, though I’ve only known her for the past several years, is like the daughter I never had. It really depended on the argument. Becca, though she is so strong, is still quite fragile from her past. You know, she didn’t walk away from George on her own accord—he was killed—well, so she thought. So I feel very protective of her when I see Grayson behave so aggressively. My Gracie has never acted that way before. I’ve also never seen him so torn up and broken down by a woman.  To see what she has done to him—my heart leans in his direction. Now that I’m with Charlie, I just try to spend as much time with him and let those two kids try to figure things out for themselves.

3.  Errrrrrr – speaking of Charlie, Hazel—have you found Jesus yet, and if so, how was it? 😉

Oh, you are just as bad as Becca is, you naughty girl! Can’t you girls think about anything besides sex? (You should know that she is giggling and blushing at the moment)

No. It’s no secret that women are worse than men! Come out with it then! Is Charlie taking you to church, Hazel?

We may have said Hallelujah a few times. (giggling) Oh no! Don’t put that in there! Oh dear, that’s not going to be seen in a national newspaper, is it?

No. No, of course not! (Internationally on the internet but we won’t tell her that!)

Oh good! (sigh of relief) Well, it was so nice to talk to you, dear! Make sure to come and stay  with us at The Morgan Inn—we’d love to have you!

Thank you, Hazel! (I want to steal

Review for Asleep by Elizabeth Darcy

asleep

My Rating: 4/5

Author:  Elizabeth Darcy
Title: Asleep (Fairytale Collection #2)

Genre:  New Adult/Fairytale/Fantasy Romance

Background:

Amazon Description:
A new adult fantasy romance reboot of the sleeping beauty tale.

**Because this book involves mature characters, it contains some adult content.**

When her beloved Prince Devaran is abducted from her parents’ castle during their engagement announcement ceremony, Princess Jessmyn vows that nothing will stop her from bringing his abductors to justice. Rescuing Dev won’t be easy, and Jess will have to form an alliance with the other Realms if she’s to win the most important battle of her life.

Imprisoned in a forbidding tower, Dev tries to find a way to warn Jess of the perils she’ll face. Weakened by deprivation and by the drugs administered by the madwoman who kidnapped him, Dev drifts between sleep and consciousness. As he relives cherished moments spent with Jess, Dev wonders if he’ll ever again be with the woman he loves.

Opinions:

My Short Summary: Asleep is a retelling of the fairytale Sleeping Beauty. If you are looking for dragons, fairies, and evil witches, you are in the wrong place. First of all, “Sleeping Beauty” is a prince, and it’s not magic that is keeping him asleep but a sleeping potion. In fact, there is no magic involved in this story, but a medieval-style fantasy novel. Two realms are about to be joined through a marriage – something that is not usually done. Things do not go according to plan. You cannot have a wedding without a groom. After Prince Dev is cunningly kidnapped, Princess Jess must find out whole is responsible and bring him back. There are no damsel in distress in this novel. Rather, women are as much warriors as the men. As Jess discovers who is behind the kidnapping of her betrothed, she realizes that this deed involves the entire five realms.

Narration: Third person through Jess and Dev.

Character Development: The story has flashbacks to how Jess and Dev finally fall in love with each. Their characters are the most developed. The reader learns about their weaknesses and insecurities while understanding how and why they fell in love with each other. I would have liked to have seen a little more background development with the kidnapper.

Plot Development/Flow: The flashbacks in the novel work well with the drug induced sleep that Dev is put through. I believe this strengthens the plot overall. I feel the beginning is slightly slow. With Jess looking for Dev (and Dev in and out of consciousness), it seems to drag on a little bit. Once a plan is determined, things move along better. As stated before, this is different version of Sleeping Beauty that most people know.

Standalone or Part of a Series: This is a standalone book in a part of a fairytale collection. If you enjoy retelling of fairy tales, then you might want to try this book.

Q & A:

The best thing about writing this book?
Being with those characters and in the medieval world (without all the creature comfort inconveniences). It was a chance to really let my imagination rip.

Where did you get your idea for this story?
As a teenager I read the tragic medieval love story of Abelard and Heloise and it’s stuck with me all these years. They had a son and I was toying with the idea of what kind of psychology he would have bearing in mind what happened to his parents, when I saw a friend of mine, a bit of a ‘hooray Henry’ who wanted to be a F1 driver, race. What a transformation in a fellow! He became totally focused, totally strategic in his approach. And with that my medieval Knight Templar was born, a medieval workaholic trying to avoid emotions and avoid his parents’ mistakes and running headlong into his own series of unfortunate decisions. Of course, I threw in a bit of magic, alchemy and a crusade or two for good measure.

What would you tell aspiring writers out there?
Read voraciously. Write obsessively. Be professional and learn about publishing all the way round. Edit!

What is your favorite book?
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate?
Coffee. If it’s not water, wine or coffee, it’s not worth drinking.

I want to thank Deborah Valentine for allowing me to promote her book on my blog. I hope this post has inspired you to go out and read The Knightmare!
